No. 16 Men’s Basketball Outlasts Visiting Barton

PEMBROKE – The 16th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team scored 20 points off of 15 turnovers and converted 20 offensive rebounds into 25 second-chance points and the Braves overcame an upset bid by visiting Barton to post a 97-90 victory over the Bulldogs on Thursday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The triumph marked the ninth-straight win for the Braves (13-1, 10-1 CC) who improved to 8-0 this season in their home arena as well. It is the fourth-straight loss for Barton (4-8, 2-6) who had its two-game series win streak snapped with the result as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The Bulldogs served notice of their intentions quickly in a first half that saw them convert on nearly 49 percent of their field goal attempts, including a 3-of-6 clip from the perimeter. The visitors led by as many as nine points, 23-14, in the opening stanza after an old-fashioned 3-point play from Malik Bryant at the 13:05 mark, but UNCP tacked up the next nine points to even the game back up. Jakari Gallon gave the hosts a 43-41 advantage with 2:41 left before the intermission, but Barton scored the last four points of the initial period to lug a 45-43 lead into the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
Barton tallied the first bucket of the second half just 22 seconds in, but the Black & Gold swung the momentum with a 15-2 run over the next 3-1/2 minutes that eventually gave UNCP a 58-49 advantage. Donaven Hairston made it a two-possession game, 63-59, on a transition bucket with 10:51 remaining, but the Braves stretched their lead back out to double digits, 74-64, two minutes later and held the visitors at arm's length the rest of the way out.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Senior Tyrell Kirk scored a season-high 22 points to lead the home team, while also adding six assists, five rebounds and four steals as well.
+ Senior Spencer Levi tallied 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, while also logging seven rebounds and a career-high five blocks as well.
+ Freshman Trenton McIntyre registered his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in 32 minutes of action.
+ Senior Deon Berrien chipped in a dozen points, while redshirt junior Jordan Ratliffe finished his night with 11 points.
NOTABLES
+ This year's version of the Black & Gold became the latest squad to register a win streak of nine or more games. That feat has now been accomplished five times in the last eight seasons. The 1984-85 and 1990-91 squads share the program record with 12-consecutive victories.
+ UNCP totaled 20 or more offensive rebounds for the third time this season against the Bulldogs on Thursday. That showing fueled a +13 advantage in the rebounding column – the ninth time this season that UNCP has outdid its opponents by double digits on the boards.
+ The Braves logged 20 or more made free throws for the fifth time this season, and the third time in the last four games.
UP NEXT
The Braves will open up a four-game road trip on Monday when they make the short trip northeast to battle Mount Olive (9-5, 8-2 CC) in Kornegay Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
