No. 20 Men’s Basketball Finishes Off Season Sweep Of Chowan

PEMBROKE – The 20th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team scored 31 points off of 16 turnovers and converted 17 offensive rebounds into 27 second-chance points to fuel a big offensive night as the Braves completed a home-and-home sweep of visiting Chowan with a 99-79 rout of the Hawks on Tuesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the seventh-straight win for the Braves (10-1, 7-1 CC) who converted on 50 percent of their field goal attempts in the outing and led for nearly 39 minutes. The loss prevented consecutive victories for Chowan (1-9, 1-7) who picked up its first triumph of the season on December 18 against King at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNCP shot a modest 46 percent from the field in the opening half and committed just three turnovers, while also holding off a serious charge by the Hawks early on. UNCP led by double-digits, 13-3, just less than five minutes into contest, but the Hawks put together a rally and eventually made it a two-possession game three minutes later following a jumper from Jay Estime. The teams traded punches after that until Jordan Ratliffe's 3-pointer with 6:41 left before the intermission sparked the hosts on a mild 9-2 run that eventually allowed them to take a 46-36 advantage into the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
A 54.5 percent success rate in the second half, as well as 11 turnovers by the visitors, allowed the Black & Gold to take complete control of the outcome. The Hawks put together an early 11-2 run to make it a two-possession game once again with 14:56 to play, but UNCP scored 19 of the next 21 points to swing the momentum for good. UNCP led by as many as 29 points, 95-66, after Jordan Ratliffe's 3-pointer with 5:47 remaining before taking its foot off of the gas.
