No. 24 Soccer Gets Big Win At North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Newcomer Freya Lodge Whitham punched in the match's only goal in the 79th minute as the 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke soccer team rallied behind a staunch defensive effort to post a momentum-changing 1-0 shutout at Conference Carolinas-leading North Greenville on Friday evening.

The win helped the Braves (12-2-1, 8-1-1 CC) keep pace in the race for the 2022 Conference Carolina regular season crown, while also giving the Black & Gold its eighth win away from Pembroke this season as well. The result snapped a 10-match win streak for the Crusaders (10-3-1, 9-1-0) who suffered their first league loss of the campaign as well.

SCORING SUMMARY
79' Morgan Hill struck a perfectly-placed corner kick into the center of the penalty area, and Freya Lodge Whitham out-jumped a pair of North Greenville defenders and used a header to redirect the service to the top shelf of the Crusaders net.

TOP BRAVES
+ Freshman Freya Lodge Whitham mustered just one shot in Friday's outing, but that was all she needed to produce her second collegiate goal, and her first since netting the final goal of UNCP's 8-0 win at Erskine on September 10.
+ Redshirt junior Morgan Hill registered her fourth assist of the 2022 season, including her third assist on a game-winning goal. Hill also managed a shot in Friday's contest as well.
+ Junior Chiara Coppin chalked up four saves on the way to logging her sixth shutout of the season. Coppin has also played the opening half of three other clean sheets by the Braves in 2022 as well.
NOTABLES
+ UNCP used Friday's victory to vault itself up into second place in the Conference Carolinas standings. The Braves sit two points behind North Greenville, and have a one-point edge over third-place Mount Olive heading into a nearly-full slate of league matches on Saturday.
+ The Braves matched a school record with their eighth road win of the season on Friday. The 2019 edition of the Black & Gold registered an 8-3-0 mark on the road.
+ The Black & Gold has now recorded at least 12 victories in five out of the last seven seasons. That span includes 15-win seasons by both the 2017 and 2021 clubs.

UP NEXT
UNCP will close out the home portion of its 2022 regular season schedule on Tuesday when it suits up to host Conference Carolinas rival Barton (5-4-2, 5-2-2 CC) on Senior Night at Lumbee River EMC Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and admission is free.
