Football Succumbs To Big Offensive Day At Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston racked up more than 530 yards of total offense, including 322 yards through the air, and scored touchdowns on 10 of their 15 offensive possessions on the afternoon to register a 70-21 victory over the visiting UNC Pembroke football team on Saturday afternoon at UC Stadium.
 
The setback snapped a three-game win streak for the Braves (4-4, 4-3 MEC) who fell to 1-3 away from Pembroke this season with the result as well. It was the second win in the last three outings for the Golden Eagles (4-4, 4-3) who improved to 3-2 all-time against the Black & Gold.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Charleston put together a 4-play, 55-yard scoring drive to put the first points of the day on the scoreboard. Chavon Wright carried the ball twice for 34 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown gallop up the middle. UC 7, UNCP 0
 
A 14-yard punt by the Braves on the previous possession set the Golden Eagles up at the visitors' 21-yard line, and the hosts took advantage quickly. Josh Brown lunged forward for a lone yard on second down, and Javonte Howard gave the hosts a two-score lead with a 20-yard scoring strike to Marquan Herron. UC 14, UNCP 0
 
Charleston keyed a 4-play, 76-yard scoring drive with a 65-yard pass from Javonte Howard to Yves Bosmans on first down. Chavon Wright covered the final nine yards himself, including a 2-yard touchdown dive to extend the lead. UC 21, UNCP 0
2ND QUARTER
The Golden Eagles bridged the first and second periods with a 3-play, 51-yard scoring drive to take a four-touchdown lead. A trick play capped the scoring drive as Chavon Wright threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Marquan Herron on the opening play of the second quarter. UC 28, UNCP 0
 
UNCP got on the board with a 9-play, 65-yard scoring drive on its opening possession of the second quarter. Josh Jones completed three of his four passing attempts for 43 yards on the drive, including a 34-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Davis. UC 28, UNCP 7
 
An ill-timed turnover set Charleston up inside the red zone later in the second quarter, and the hosts needed just two plays to turn the interception into points. Chavon Wright ran for yardage on both plays of the drive, including an 8-yard touchdown gallop. UC 35, UNCP 7
 
Josh Jones engineered an 11-play, 72-yard touchdown drive to give the Braves their final points of the opening half. Jones threw for 28 yards on 3-of-5 passing on the possession, while also rushing twice for 39 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown scamper. UC 35, UNCP 14
3RD QUARTER
UNCP scored its final points of the afternoon with its initial possession of the second half. Josh Jones and Zechariah Adams-Duckson hooked up on two pass-and-catches to comprise the drive, including a 48-yard touchdown reception on the second play from scrimmage. UC 35, UNCP 21
 
Charleston answered UNCP's points with a 12-play, 72-yard touchdown drive of its own.  The Golden Eagles used short passes from Javonte Howard to convert a pair of key third-down situations, and then Howard hooked up with Marquan Herron on a 28-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-2 to culminate the possession. UC 42, UNCP 21
 
A clutch kickoff return set the Golden Eagles up in good field position again, and Charleston needed just three plays to light up the scoreboard again. Chavon Wright rushed three times for all 30 yards on the possession, including a 9-yard touchdown run around right tackle. UC 49, UNCP 21
 
The Golden Eagles scored their final points of the third quarter on a defensive touchdown. C.J. Davis had the football stripped from his grasp in the midst of an 11-yard reception, and Roderick Webb jumped on the loose ball in the end zone. UC 56, UNCP 21
4TH QUARTER
Charleston tacked up their ninth touchdown of the day to highlight its second possession of the final period. Javonte Howard led the hosts on a 7-play, 84-yard scoring drive, including a 5-yard touchdown pass to Niko Kausky, but the drive was keyed by a 66-yard pass from Howard to Marquan Herron on 3rd-and-10. UC 63, UNCP 21
 
Charleston added their final points of the day with an 8-play, 56-yard touchdown drive midway through the fourth quarter. Javonte Howard completed a 7-yard pass on a key third-down situation midway through the possession, and then capped off the drive with a 1-yard scoring run. UC 70, UNCP 21
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Redshirt sophomore Zechariah Adams-Duckson accounted for 120 yards of total offense, including three receptions for 65 yards and a third-quarter touchdown.
+ Senior Josh Jones threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-37 passing with one interception. He also rushed eight times for 35 yards and an additional score.
+ Redshirt junior Marcus Davis led Code Black in tackles for the second-straight week, this time totaling 10 stops (7 solo). Redshirt sophomores Dante Bowlding and Virgil Lemons both registered interceptions for the Braves as well.
NOTABLES
+ Saturday's loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Braves who had not tasted defeat since Week 4 setback at Fairmont State. The Black & Gold also fell to 2-3 all-time in the series with Charleston as well.
+ Eleven of UNCP's 15 possessions on the afternoon went for 15 yards or less. Fourteen drives spanned five or less plays.
+ The Black & Gold won the time of possession battle for the third time this season in Saturday's loss. UNCP possessed the football for nearly 33 minutes (32:40) and ran 74 offensive plays.
