Wrestling Dominant In Dual, SACC Opener At Coker

| By:
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team tacked up 24 takedowns, a quintet of 4-point near falls, and got bonus-point victories in five different weight classes on the way to a convincing 39-6 victory over Coker in the dual and South Atlantic Conference Carolinas opener for both teams on Tuesday evening inside the DeLoach Center.

It was the second win in the last three season-opening dual meets for the Braves (1-0, 1-0 SACC) who improved to 8-0 all-time in the series with their Carolinas rivals. It was also the second-straight season, as well as the third time in the 8-meet-old series between the two squads, that Coker (0-1, 0-1) has succumbed by 30 or more points.

Logan Seliga kicked off the evening with a no-sweat 15-0 technical fall win over Corey Gallivan at 125 pounds, and freshman Logan Robinson followed with an equally-as-impressive 16-1 technical fall over Brandon Dasen to give the visitors a quick 10-0 lead. Coker would use a forfeit victory at 141 pounds to grab what would turn out to be its only triumph of the matchup.

Jake Piccirilli keyed a 10-1 major decision at 149 pounds with a pair of takedowns in the second period, and Loye Burkhead used a third-period takedown in his 157-pound matchup with Noah Korenoski to tough out a 6-5 decision and give the Black & Gold a 17-6 advantage. Will Lowery highlighted a 12-4 major decision at 165 pounds with a trio of takedowns in the final stanza, and freshman Logan Hoffman delivered the clinching dagger when he pinned Austin Collins just 53 seconds into the second period of his 174-pound bout.

Christopher Dickey kept the UNCP train rolling with a 14-7 decision at 184 pounds, Garrett Steele notched a forfeit win at 197 pounds and Ryan Walker wrapped the night in Black & Gold when he scored three points in the third period to key a 10-6 victory in the heavyweight matchup.

The Braves will be back in action again this weekend when they split their squad and head southward for a pair of Sunday tournaments. UNCP will compete at both The Citadel Open in Charleston, S.C., while also making an appearance in Franklin Springs, Ga., at the Emmanuel-hosted Georgia Open.
