No. 14 Men’s Basketball Fends Off Newberry In Overtime

PEMBROKE – Newberry QuanDaveon McCollum hit a contested fall-away jumper as time expired to send the game into overtime, but the 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team wrestled away the momentum the rest of the way out to help the Braves tough out a season-opening victory over the Wolves, 74-66, on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

UNCP (1-0) has now claimed 11 of its last 13 season-opening contests, and improved to 64-10 in Pembroke since the close of the 2015-16 campaign with the result as well. The Wolves (0-1) fell to 2-5 all-time in their series with the Black & Gold, but Saturday's tilt marked the first meeting between the two squads in Pembroke.

RECORDS: UNC Pembroke 1-0; Newberry 0-1
LOCATION: Pembroke, N.C. (Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court)
HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNCP tacked up 13 of the game's first 18 points to claim the momentum early, but Newberry shot an impressive 62 percent in the opening half to keep pace for the entirety of the stanza. The Wolves knotted the score up at 18 apiece on an old-fashioned 3-point play from Joseph Malik midway through the half, and went punch-for-punch with the hosts after that. The Braves eventually lugged a 34-33 lead into the intermission.
2ND HALF
JaJuan Carr fastbreak layup with 96 seconds left gave the Braves a 4-point edge, 60-56, but Newberry would not go down without a fight. The Wolves used a 3-shot foul to pull to within one, 60-59, with 28 seconds left, but Carr put UNCP back up by two with a free throw on the other end of the court. Devario Sheppard's potential game-winning 3-pointer seconds later caught the front end iron, but QuanDaveon McCollum grabbed the rebound and tied the game with a fall-away jumper just inside the perimeter line as the buzzer sounded.
OVERTIME
Devario Sheppard grabbed the tipoff and slammed the ball home to give Newberry a quick lead, but it was all UNCP after that. The Braves went 4-for-6 from the field in the extra time, including a pivotal 3-pointer from JaJuan Carr at the 2:07 mark that stretched the lead out to seven points, 71-64. Newberry missed their final six field goal attempts in overtime following Sheppard's dunk.
