Wrestling Competes At Georgia Open, The Citadel Open

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman Nigel Williams posted a pair of decisions to pave his way into the quarterfinal round of the 197-pound tournament at The Citadel Open and ultimately walked away with a fourth-place showing, while Chance Cottingham registered a pair of pins in the 133-pound bracket at the Georgia Open to highlight action for the UNC Pembroke wrestling team on Sunday.
 
Williams toughed out decisions over wrestlers from both Virginia Military Institute and Southeastern before falling to a pair of NCAA Division I foes in Charleston, S.C. Cottingham tallied a third-period pin of Life's Ethan Dooley, and followed with a second-period pin of Lander's Gabe Boldasaro before bowing out of the tournament due to injury.
 
Redshirt freshman Brandon Smith was the only other UNCP wrestler to post a victory on Sunday as he split four matches in the 141-pound bracket at the Georgia Open.
 
The Braves (1-0, 1-0 SACC) will be back in action again on Tuesday when they return home to take on South Atlantic Conference Carolinas rival Limestone (0-0, 0-0) on Superhero and Youth Night at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Wrestling action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. and admission is free.
