Back-2-Back! Soccer Claims Conference Carolinas Crown, Again

BROWNS SUMMIT – Tournament most valuable player Anna Grossheim netted a goal in each half, and the UNC Pembroke soccer team added an insurance score with an own goal in the 72nd minute, as the third-seeded Braves cruised to their second-straight Conference Carolinas Tournament crown with a 3-1 victory over top-seeded North Greenville on Sunday afternoon.

The result helped the Braves (16-2-2) stretch their unbeaten streak out to eight matches, while also giving the program an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament which begins next week at selected campus sites. The setback stopped a three-match win streak for the Crusaders (13-4-1) who were seeking the program's first conference tournament championship.

SCORING SUMMARY
12' A foul by North Greenville near the midfield stripe warranted a free kick for the Braves, and Anna Grossheim delivered with a cannon blast from 45 yards that sailed over the outstretched fingers of NGU netminder Sammie Montgomery and into the back of the net.
47' UNCP pushed its advantage out to a pair of goals just more than a minute into the second stanza when Mercy Bell dribbled into the penalty area and dished a pass to a charging Anna Grossheim who laced a ball inside the far post.
51'' North Greenville climbed back into the contest 3-1/2 minutes later when Molly Platt served a corner kick in front of the goal mouth and Dani Avelar out-jumped a pair of UNCP defenders to redirect the service into the net.
72' A corner kick opportunity turned golden for the Black & Gold, but in an unconventional manner as a failed header clearance by the Crusaders defense ricocheted in the wrong direction into the side netting on the far post.
