Wrestling Battles Lander On Senior Night Tuesday

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team will put the finishing touches on the home portion of its 2021-22 regular season schedule on Tuesday when the Braves suit up to battle South Atlantic Conference Carolinas regular season champion Lander in a 7 p.m. Senior Night dual meet at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
Winners in four out of their last five outings, the Braves (6-7, 4-2 CC) will lock horns with a Bearcats (10-2, 8-0) squad that will ride a six-match win streak into Pembroke. Lander clinched the SACC regular season title with a 19-13 victory at Belmont Abbey on Saturday, and have not tasted defeat since a 31-13 setback to then-No. 2 St. Cloud State in early December.
 
But the Black & Gold has been surging as of late with a 4-1 record over the last month, with the only blemish coming in the form of an 18-17 heartbreaker to Belmont Abbey at home just more than a week ago. UNCP is 2-1 in its home arena this season, and has won both previous matchups with Lander by a 71-6 margin.
 
Heavyweight Zach Shaffer continues to pace the Black & Gold with a 24-4 record in his first season in Pembroke, while all-American Nick Daggett has amassed 17 wins in 2021-22, and will head into Tuesday having captured seven of his last eight battles on the mat. Redshirt sophomore Rahsaan Vereen, a 165-pounder, sports 16 wins this season and has won three of his last four matchups.
 
UNCP will honor its nine-member senior class – Marcus Bell, Nathan Buchanan, Anthony Carter, Daggett, Jovaun Johnson, Braxton May-Nicholson, Ryan Monk, Cliff Owens and Joey Perez – prior to Tuesday's action. Admission to all 2021-22 wrestling home matches is free.
