PEMBROKE - The UNC Pembroke softball team recorded three multi-run innings in the season opener to secure a 9-7 victory against Kutztown on Sunday at the UNCP Softball Field in the UNCP Invitational. UNCP rallied late in game two against West Virginia State, but fell 10-9 in 8 innings.
The Braves (1-1) have now won the last four meetings with the Golden Bears (1-1), with the overall series split 12-12. The setback for the Braves in game two marked the second straight loss to the Yellow Jackets (1-1), but just the third overall loss to WVSU in the series.

The Braves loaded the bases with a single from Tatum Brummitt, a walk from Jordan Adcox, and a single from MaKenna Sibbett. A sacrifice fly from Lauren Hilbourn to deep right field helped score Brummitt, while Emily Biddle knocked a single to center field to give UNCP a 7-3 lead. |

Kutztown put together three singles to the outfield in a row to get back one of their runs. The Golden Bears loaded the bases as Kate Ostaszews hit a deep sacrifice fly to left field to tack on another run. Hannah Auvil doubled down the left field line to plate two more runs and knot the score at 7-7. |

UNCP put runners on the corners after a Carson Powell walk and a Mary Sells double. Tatum Brummitt found the outfield grass to score both Powell and Sells. |

Marijo Wilkes got the inning started with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Tatum Brummitt drew a walk, followed by an RBI double to center field from Jordan Adcox. A deep sacrifice fly by McKenna Sibbett scored Brummit, and an ill-timed error by the shortstop helped score Adcox on the next at bat to put UNCP ahead 3-0. |

West Virginia State put runners on first second with a single and a walk. An timely error in the field allowed the Yellow Jackets to score one run, followed by a fielder's choice for another run. Paige Scruggs and Lindsey Phares both singled up the middle to give West Virginia State a 6-5 lead. |

With the international tiebreaker rule in play, back to back doubles allowed two Yellow Jackets to cross the plate. Two singles and a sacrifice fly to the outfield gave WVSU a 10-6 lead. |
