Wrestling Picks Up Big Win At Mount Olive

| By:
MOUNT OLIVE – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team combined for 27 takedowns and a quartet of near falls and logged eight individual victories on the night on the way to a 33-6 victory at Mount Olive in a South Atlantic Conference Carolinas dual meet on Wednesday evening inside Kornegay Arena.

It was the fourth win in the last five outings for the Braves (6-7, 4-2 SACC) who will get a short rest before heading to region nemesis Limestone on Thursday for another league dual. The result snapped a three-match win streak for the Trojans (8-7, 2-4) who have now dropped both meetings in the series with the Black & Gold.

Nick Daggett registered a 16-1 technical fall in the first 2-1/2 minutes of the evening to get the Braves going quickly, and Anthony Carter made it an 8-0 lead on the team scoreboard with a decision at 133 pounds. A pair of Mount Olive victories over the next three bouts, coupled with a handful of team point deductions aimed at both coaches, moved the Trojans within three points, 9-6, following the 157-pound matchup, but it was all Black & Gold after that.

Rahsaan Vereen signaled a run of five-straight bonus-point victories for the Braves with a 16-6 major decision at 165 pounds. Shylik Scriven logged a second-period pin at 174 pounds, Jovaun Johnson (184 pounds) and Bryce Walker (197) followed with major decisions, and Zach Shaffer needed just 25 seconds to close the night with a pin in the heavyweight match.
