No. 11 Men’s Basketball Rallies To Top No. 25 Flagler In NCAA Tournament

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 11th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, including a 7-for-13 clip from beyond the arch, as the fourth-seeded Braves completely erased a 13-point halftime deficit to stun fifth-seeded and 25th-ranked Flagler, 74-70, in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Southeast Regional on Saturday evening.

The triumph snapped a two-game skid in NCAA postseason games for the Braves (27-3) who matched a 31-year-old school record for wins in a season with the result as well. The loss put the wraps on the 2021-22 campaign for the Saints (23-8) who fell to 3-21 all-time in the series with UNCP.

The victory moves the Braves through to Sunday's semifinal round where they will face off with 5th-ranked and top-seeded Augusta (29-3). Tipoff against the host Jaguars is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

THE BASICS
SCORE: UNC Pembroke 74, Flagler 70
RECORDS: UNC Pembroke 27-3; Flagler 23-8
LOCATION: Augusta, Ga. (Christenberry Fieldhouse - NCAA Southeast Regional)
HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Offense came at a premium for both teams in the opening half as neither side was able to convert more than 38 percent of its field goal attempts. Flagler scored 13 points off of a dozen turnovers by the Black & Gold, and converted nine offensive rebounds into 13 second-chance points to fuel a 37-24 halftime lead. UNCP went 1-for-9 from the field and turned the ball over four times in the first five minutes of the contest, and Chase Fiddler's 3-pointer at the 13:22 mark gave the Saints a lead they would hold through the intermission.
2ND HALF
UNCP scored 18 of the first 23 points in the second half to completely negate a sizable halftime deficit, and eventually knotted the score up on an old-fashioned 3-point play from Tyrell Kirk at the 14:00 mark. The squads traded punches for much of the next eight minutes of play before Jordan Ratliffe's 3-pointer with 5:44 remaining ignited the Braves on an 11-3 run that swung the momentum for good.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Redshirt junior Jordan Ratliffe matched a team-high with 22 points on 7-of-14 field goal shooting in 38 minutes on the court. Ratliffe went 7-for-9 from the free throw line, while also adding two assists and a pair of steals.
+ Senior Tyrell Kirk matched a team-high with 22 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 tally from the charity stripe. He chipped in two assists and as many steals as well.
+ Senior Deon Berrien tallied 11 points and two blocks in 21 minutes of action. He was 3-for-8 from the perimeter.
+ Senior Spencer Levi logged just six points in the contest, but finished the evening with 15 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
NOTABLES
+ UNCP improved to 3-6 in NCAA Tournament contests with Saturday's victory. All three of the NCAA postseason wins for the Black & Gold have come against teams from the Peach Belt Conference (Columbus State, Francis Marion).
+ The Braves snapped a two-game skid in NCAA Tournament games with Saturday's win as well. UNCP's last win in the Southeast Regional heading into the weekend was a 75-72 win over Francis Marion in the 2017-18 NCAA Tournament.
+ Saturday's win pulled this year's edition of the Braves even with the Dan Kenney-coached 1990-91 club for the most single-season victories in program history. The 1990-91 squad finished its campaign with a 27-4 record.
UP NEXT
The Braves will continue play in the NCAA Southeast Regional on Sunday when they battle 5th-ranked and top-seeded Augusta (29-3) in Christenberry Fieldhouse. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
