Baseball Finishes Off Weekend Sweep At Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke baseball team used a pair of late-inning rallies and a handful of solid performances from its bullpen to finish off a weekend sweep of Francis Marion on Saturday at Sparrow Stadium. UNCP scored lone runs in the last three innings to post a 3-2 win in Saturday's opener, and rallied for a pair of runs in the sixth and eighth innings to prevail, 4-2, in the nightcap.
 
It was the third- and fourth-straight wins for the Braves (32-13, 20-7 CC) who tallied its first weekend sweep of Francis Marion since the 2017 season, and their first-ever road sweep of the Patriots. Francis Marion (28-16, 15-12), who rolled into the weekend as the hottest team in Conference Carolinas, has now dropped three-straight games for the first time since late February.
 
UNCP's bullpen struck out nine batters and did not allow an earned run in eight innings of work across Saturday's twinbill. That feat included a pair of saves from southpaw Landen Smith who tallied six strikeouts in three innings of work.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 5 UNCP got three consecutive 2-out singles, including a run-scoring at-bat from Ethan Ott, to knot the game up at one run apiece heading to the sixth.
TOP 6 The Braves strung together another 2-out rally in the sixth, getting consecutive singles from Blake Hinson and Garrett Littleton, before an ill-timed error brought the go-ahead run across the plate.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 6 Wellington Guzman hammered Nick Palumbo's first offering of the sixth over the fence in left field to spark a 2-run rally by the Braves that evened the score up. UNCP loaded the bases with its next three at-bats before eventually knotting the scored up at two apiece on a RBI groundout from Bobby Dixon.
TOP 8 UNCP got consecutive one-out singles from Gage Hammonds and Ethan Ott, and then moved both runners into scoring position on a grounder to shortstop. Both runs would eventually cross the plate on a costly fielding error by the FMU infield.
