Volleyball Falls To Embry-Riddle, Newberry At Flagler Saints Invitational

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team tallied nine blocks, eight in the final contest of the day, but fell short on the opening day of competition at the Flagler Saints Invitational. The Braves fell 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 14-25, 17-25) to Embry-Riddle in the opening match of the day, and then fell 3-0 (22-25, 21-25, 28-30) to Newberry. 
 
The setback for the Braves (0-2) marks the first time since 2019 that the Black & Gold have lost the first two outings of the season. UNCP will look to bounce back on Saturday for the final two matches of the Flagler Saints Invitational.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 22-25 Embry-Riddle jumped out to an early 10-4 lead off of a kill from Cameron Gilleland. UNC Pembroke closed the gap with the next three points, but the Eagles pushed their lead out for good with a service ace by Kendyl Taylor.
SET 2 I 25-22 The Braves used a kill from Erin O'Donnell for a 12-9 lead before Embry-Riddle knotted the score at 13 apiece. The Black & Gold hit .294 in the set and took the lead for good with a Shannon Skryd kill. 
SET 3 I 14-25 Embry-Riddle hit a blistering .469 in the set and committed just two attack errors. UNCP chipped away with a kill from Brianna Warren, but the Eagles scored the next five points to close out the set. 
SET 4 I 17-25 Embry-Riddle continued with the hot hands hitting .433 from the net in the final set and committing just two attack errors. The Braves scored five of the first seven points, but Embry-Riddle took the lead for good with an early 7-6 lead.

MATCH SUMMARY
SET 1 I 22-25 UNCP used blocks from Brianna Warren and Quincy Vanderhorst for a 14-13 lead early in the set. Newberry scored the next five points and hit .407 at the net with three attack errors to take the opening set. 
SET 2 I 21-25 The Black & Gold took a 9-6 lead off of a service ace from Elise Martin. The Braves forced the Wolves to 10 attack errors during the set, but Newberry took the lead for good with an attack error by UNCP.
SET 3 I 28-30 UNC Pembroke won four straight points to take a quick 9-7 lead. Newberry hit .321 from the net and scored four of the final six points of the match.

The Braves will close out action at the Flagler Saints Invitational with a pair of matches on Saturday inside the Flagler Gymnasium. UNCP will take on the host Saints (1-1) at 1 p.m., before wrapping up the weekend against Davenport (1-1) at 5 p.m.
