UNCP went on a 7-0 scoring run and used big three from the corner from Nygell Verdier to give the hosts a 63-61 lead with 1:38 remaining in the period. Virginia State picked up an old-fashioned three-point play from Kendall Bynum with 12 seconds remaining to knot the score at 68, but JaJuan Carr drained a jumper as time expired to fuel the outcome.
