Men’s Basketball Routs Columbus State

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot better than 48 percent from the field in the second half and limited visiting Columbus State to just 10 percent shooting in the opening period on the way to a 66-51 victory on Sunday in the final game of the Give Thanks Tournament at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (5-3) have now won their last three games and have also picked up the last five wins over Columbus State when playing in Pembroke. The Cougars (4-2) shot a season-low 29 percent from the field and fall to 1-1 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
A fast break layup from Nygell Verdier gave UNC Pembroke a 10-4 lead at the 12:25 mark early in the opening half. Columbus State cut its deficit to 14-10 with a running layup from Kordell Brown with just under six minutes left in the half. UNCP limited CSU to just a 10.7 percent shooting performance during the half, as the hosts closed out the period on a 13-3 run to hold a 27-13 advantage as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke extended its lead out to 31-18 early in the second half with a dunk from Elijah Cobb just two minutes into the frame. Columbus State chipped away at its deficit and used five straight points to trail 31-25, but a pair of 3-pointers from Jamarvious Jones pushed the UNCP lead out to 41-29 with 12:43 remaining in regulation. The Braves shot 48.1 percent from the field and took what would be the largest lead of the night, 56-38, following a fast break layup from JaJuan Carr with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Nygell Verdier finished with his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Charlotte native has posted double-figure rebounds in four games this season.
+ Elijah Cobb added 11 points on a 3-for-5 shooting night. The redshirt junior added eight rebounds and had one assist and one block. 
+ Tyreik McCallum finished with a career-high nine points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes of work. The newcomer also grabbed a pair of steals. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke did not trail during Sunday's contest. 
+ The Braves scored 19 points off of fast break opportunities, while the Cougars were held to just two points in transition. 
+ UNCP had 10 players that scored during Sunday's victory, four of which were in double-figures. 
+ The Black & Gold grabbed 22 more rebounds over Columbus State, which marked the largest margin of rebounds this season. UNCP tallied 52 rebounds and held Columbus State to just 30 rebounds.
