Men’s Basketball Rattles Visiting Young Harris

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team registered double-digit 3-pointers for the second time this season and had four players in double-figures to defeat Young Harris 73-52 on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (8-3, 3-0 CC) have now won their last six contests and improve to 5-0 at home this season. The setback for the Mountain Lions (6-4, 2-1 CC) snapped a six-game winning streak and marked their first conference loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Young Harris took what would be its largest lead of the night, 6-5, with a free throw from Carl Cleveland with 16:47 on the clock. Jamarvious Jones sparked the offense with a three as UNCP went on a 7-0 scoring run to take a 17-10 advantage with 11:57 remaining in the half. The Mountain Lions responded with a 7-7 run and knotted the score at 17 apiece with a layup from Turahn Thompson with 9:34 left in the half. UNC Pembroke shot 52 percent from the field and closed out the half on a 22-7 run to lead 39-24 as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
The Braves scored the first seven points of the half, but the Mountain Lions put together a 9-0 run to chip away at their deficit and trail 46-33 with 14:47 remaining in regulation. Jamarvious Jones drained a triple followed by an Elijah Cobb layup to extend the UNCP lead out to 55-37 with just over 11 minutes to play. The hosts went 5-for-15 from the perimeter during the half and took their largest lead of the night, 71-49, with a layup from Amadou Faye
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Jamarvious Jones nearly matched a career-high with 15 points highlighted by a 5-for-10 clip from the perimeter. The Johnston, S.C. native pulled down four rebounds in 18 minutes of action. 
+ Javonte Waverly came off of the bench and finished with 11 points on a 3-for-5 showing from beyond the arc. Waverly also had four rebounds, and a pair of assists and steals. 
+ JaJuan Carr also added 11 points on a 4-for-5 shooting night. The redshirt junior dished out five assists and have four rebounds and one steal. 
+ Nygell Verdier also scored in double-figures adding 10 points. Verdier grabbed a half dozen rebounds and had a trio of assists.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 43.4 percent from the field and registered double-digit 3-pointers for just the second time this season.
+ The Black & Gold limited Young Harris to just 30.4 percent shooting which is the lowest shooting performance this season. 
+ The Braves tallied 14 more rebounds than the Mountain Lions. It is just the fourth time this season YHC has not recorded more rebounds than their opponents. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 88.1 percent of the contest and did not trail by more than one point.
UP NEXT
The Braves will return to action on Dec. 30 when they welcome Tusculum to town. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
