PEMBROKE – Nationally-ranked Adelphi used a four-run sixth inning to spark the offense and limited the UNC Pembroke softball team to four scoreless innings as the Braves fell 9-7 in the opening game of the Round Robin at the UNCP Softball Field on Tuesday. UNCP struggled to get the bats going against region-rival Wingate, who threw a perfect game and defeated the hosts 8-0 in five innings.
The Braves (3-8) registered four extra-base hits but stranded nine runners in the opening contest against the Panthers. The Black & Gold are 3-1 all-time against Adelphi, and are now 17-34 against Wingate.

Emily Rose started the inning with a single up the middle. Marijo Wilkes smacked a double into the left field gap to score Rose, and Wilkes advanced to third on the throw home. Chloe Hunsinger laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Wilkes to put UNCP ahead 2-0. Cirsten Calloway drew a walk, but scored when Kadence Sheppard to the outfield grass. |

Angela Lignelli doubled to center field and scored on a single to right field from Jordyn Pasqueralli as the Panthers trailed 5-4. Courtney Wengryn sent one out of the park for a two-run blast to give Adelphi a 7-5 lead. |

Savanna Brooks started the inning with a leadoff double to left field. An ill-timed fielding and throwing error by the Braves allowed the Bulldogs to have runners on second and third. Back-to-back singles from Wingate gave them a 2-0 lead. Kaylee Hobgood drew a walk to load the bases, but Heaven Maness lit up the scoreboard with a grand slam over the left field fence to put WU ahead 6-0. |
