No. 5 Men’s Basketball Thwarts Barton, Reaches Record Win Streak

PEMBROKE – Visiting Barton used an early hot hand to fuel a 7-point lead at the intermission, but the 5th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team opened the second half with a 21-8 run and shot nearly 57 percent from the field in the stanza to turn back the upset-minded Bulldogs, 93-74, on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The result marked the school-record 17th-straight victory for UNCP (24-1, 16-1 CC) who also stretched its home winning skein out to eight games as well. It was the fifth loss in the last seven outings for the Bulldogs (13-10, 11-5) who were searching for their first win in Pembroke since Dec. 13, 2000.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Missed baskets were at a rarity for Barton in the first period as the Bulldogs shot 48.5 percent from the field, including a quartet of 3-pointers, to inevitably take a 43-36 lead into the locker rooms. The Bulldogs scored 10 of the game's first 12 points to grab a lion's share of the early momentum, but the Black & Gold fought back and eventually knotted the score up at 20 points apiece on a layup from Cortez Marion-Holmes with 8-1/2 minutes left before the break. The visitors would eventually build their lead back out to nine points, 43-34, following a pair of free throws from Marcus Boykin with 18 ticks left.
2ND HALF
Barton pushed its lead back out to nine points just 44 seconds into the second stanza, but Nygell Verdier's layup sparked a game-changing 21-6 run by the Braves that would eventually give them the lead for good following Amare Miller's short jumper nearly six minutes later. UNCP padded its lead out to double digits, 72-61, on two free throws from Verdier at the 9:16 mark, and led by as many as 24 points, 92-68, before emptying its bench with three minutes left to play. Barton shot just 26.7 percent from the field in the second half, including an eight-minute stretch that watched them can just two field goals (11 attempts).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Sophomore Nygell Verdier scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the second half, and finished the evening with eight rebounds, two assists and one steal as well. Verdier was 5-for-7 from the field in the latter period.
+ Redshirt freshman Cortez Marion-Holmes recorded 11 of his 16 points in the second half, and added five rebounds to his statistics line. Marion-Holmes tallied a 5-for-7 shooting effort in the second half as well.
+ Sophomore Javonte Waverly came in off of the bench to register 14 points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes of action. He registered a 3-for-6 effort from the perimeter, with all three 3-pointers coming in the second half (5 attempts).
+ Redshirt sophomore Elijah Cobb flirted with a double-double before closing out his night with eight points and a team-best nine boards. He also totaled two blocks and a trio of assists.
NOTABLES
+ UNCP has now strung together 17-straight wins to edge out last year's club for the program record for consecutive victories. The 2021-22 squad tacked up 16-straight wins from Nov. 30, 2021-Feb. 5, 2022 before falling at home to Southern Wesleyan. This year's club has not tasted defeat since a 13-point home setback to Francis Marion on November 30.
+ Wednesday's 43-36 deficit at the break marked just the fifth time this season that the Braves have trailed at halftime. The Braves also trailed at the intermission in wins over Fayetteville State, Shaw, Virginia State and Columbus State (home). UNCP trailed by 10 points, 33-23, at the half in a late-November win at Virginia State.
+ The Black & Gold won Wednesday's rebounding battle, 48-33, and has now out-rebounded each of its last six opponents by 10 or more boards. UNCP has won the rebounding battle in 22 of its 25 outings in 2022-23.
UP NEXT
UNCP will get a rare weekend off from competition before resuming its 2022-23 regular season schedule on February 15 against Chowan (11-10, 9-7 CC) in the back half of a 5 p.m. Educator Appreciation Night doubleheader at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
