Softball Battles But Falls Twice At Barton

WILSON – The UNC Pembroke softball team tallied seven extra base hits and a pair of home runs, but stranded 10 base runners as they dropped a Conference Carolinas doubleheader against Barton on Tuesday afternoon at Jeffries Field. The Bulldogs put together a seven-run fifth inning and used a homer from Lindsey Massengill to take the opening game 11-3 in six innings.  The Braves rallied in the seventh inning of game two when Lauren Hilbourn sent one out of the park, but a pair of pop outs stalled the comeback as UNCP fell 10-9. 
 
 
The setback for the Braves (10-21, 3-5 CC) marks the second consecutive series sweep and is the first time UNCP has lost on the road to Barton since 2018. The Bulldogs (14-16, 5-5 CC) are now 9-9 when playing at home, but are just 16-32 all-time against the Black & Gold.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 4 Marijo Wilkes got the inning started with a leadoff double to left field. UNCP loaded the bases after a hit by pitch and a walk. Samantha Allred's patient at bat drew a walk to score Wilkes. 
BOT 5 Barton loaded the bases after a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. Gracelyn Massey cleared the bases after a double to the outfield gap. Sloane Correa followed up with a single to right field to score Massey. The Bulldogs used a pair of singles to score two more runs and closed out the inning leading 10-3.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 Kaci Roberson got the game started with a single to right field and advanced to third after a single from Samantha Allred. Roberson scored after an infield groundout, but Olivia Hall's three-run homer game UNCP an early 4-0 lead. 
BOT 4 Lindsey Massengill drew a five-pitch walk to start the inning and scored on a Gracelyn Massey double to left field. Sydney Wade doubled to left center field to score Massey and give Barton a 7-4 lead. 
TOP 6 Marijo Wilkes singled to left field and advanced to third after a pair of wild pitches. A single through the middle from Lauren Hilbourn plated Wilkes. Olivia Hall's double put runners on second and third which allowed Kadence Sheppard to knock in two runs after a single up the middle as UNCP trailed 8-7.
