Sheppard’s Homer Lifts Softball, Splits Twinbill At Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK -  Lees-McRae used hot bats early in the opening contest, but the UNC Pembroke softball team hit a trio of home runs in the back half of the doubleheader to salvage a series split with the Bobcats on Thursday at Tate Field.
 
The Bobcats jumped out to an early lead in the first inning to secure an 8-1 win in the opening contest of the day. Kadence Sheppard's solo blast in the top of the seventh inning of game two gave UNCP the lead for good on the way to a 4-3 victory in game two. 
 
The Braves (18-27, 11-9 CC) have now split their last two conference series, and the result in game two marked the first win on the road this season since a 1-0 outcome against Anderson on Feb. 19. The Bobcats (28-16, 15-7 CC) have split their last three conference contests and are now 9-3 when playing at home.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Kaci Roberson started the game with a single to right field and scored on a double from Lauren Hilbourn to give UNCP the early lead.
BOT 1 Lees-McRae loaded the bases after putting their first three batters on base. Grayson Buckner knocked a single to left field to score a pair of runs, followed by a single the outfield from Hannah Foster to score another two runs to give the Bobcats the lead for good. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 3 Kadence Sheppard got the inning started with a single to left field and then stole second. Kaci Roberson lit up the scoreboard with a two-run blast over the center field fence, followed by a solo homer from Cirstin Calloway to give the Braves a 3-1 advantage. 
BOT 6 Lees-McRae put runners on first and second after a single from Julie Gast and a walk from Megan Powell. Grayson Buckner laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, but an ill-timed passed ball allowed one Bobcat to score. Emma Jackson doubled to center field to drive in a run and knot the score at 3-3.
TOP 7 Kadence Sheppard sent one out of the park to put UNCP back out in front.

The Braves will close out the regular season on Friday in Bristol, Tenn., for a doubleheader against King (29-20, 14-6 CC). First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the King Softball Field.
