Volleyball Downs Fayetteville State, Falls To Millersville At UC Invitational

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The UNC Pembroke volleyball team needed five sets to take down local rival Fayetteville State, as the Braves won 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-11, 21-25, 15-9) in the opening game of the UC Invitational on Friday at the Wehrle Innovation Center. UNCP hit just .105 from the net against Millersville and fell 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 15-25, 14-25) to the Marauder in the second game of the invitational.
 
The Braves (4-2) are now 40-5 all-time against the Broncos (2-4), and have won the last four meetings. It was the third meeting between UNCP and Millersville (3-3), but the first since 2012, as MU holds the series 2-1.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-23 Fayetteville State scored four straight points to take an early 12-7 lead after a kill from Sydney Kendal-Eason. UNC Pembroke hit .216 from the net during the set and knotted up the score at 21 apiece after a FSU attack error, and the Braves closed out the set scoring four of the final six points to take the opening set. 
SET 2 I 22-25 A kill from Ruby Countryman gave UNCP a 14-12 advantage midway through the set. The Broncos put together three consecutive points to take a 21-18 lead after a service ace from Chiara Vittoni. FSU hit .282 from the net during the set and held onto the lead for good with a kill from Anjola Thomas to take the second set. 
SET 3 I 25-11 UNCP jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead after a kill from Vanja Przulj. The Braves scored eight consecutive points to stretch their lead out to 19-6, while hitting a game-best .343 from the net to win set three.
SET 4 I 21-25 Fayetteville State used a kill from Chiara Vittoni to give the Broncos a 17-13 advantage midway through the set. The Braves chipped away at their deficit with a three straight points to trail just 20-18, but FSU won five of the final eight points of the set to send the match to the deciding set. 
SET 5 I 15-9 The Braves got a quick start taking a 7-1 lead following a service ace from Katelynn Swain. UNCP padded its lead, 14-7 with a service ace from Hope Turbyfill and closed the match out with a kill from Anaya Carter.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-22 UNC Pembroke took a 10-8 lead after Karagyn Durco and Katelynn Swain teamed up for a block. The Braves hit .256 from the net during set, which was their best hitting percentage of the match, and used a three-point scoring surge to secure the set. 
SET 2 I 20-25 Millersville took an early 7-2 lead after a UNCP attack error. MU scored six straight points to extend their lead out to 24-13, but UNCP made a comeback scoring the next seven points of the set to trail 24-20. The Marauders picked up a kill from Emma Kerwin to take the set. 
SET 3 I 15-25 UNCP struggled to get into an offensive rhythm as MU took a large 20-11 led after a UNC Pembroke attack error. Millersville hit a match-high .419 from the net on the way to take a two set lead. 
SET 4 I 14-25 Millersville jumped out to a 16-3 advantage after scoring 10 straight points. UNCP rallied off four consecutive points to trim the deficit back to 18-10, but Millersville hit .359 from the net while the Braves hit just .098 from the net as MU took the final set.
