Football Shines On Homecoming Against West Virginia State

PEMBROKE - The UNC Pembroke football team scored 41 points in the first half and did not allow West Virginia State to score in the second half to defeat the Yellow Jackets 62-17 un the 18th annual homecoming game on Saturday evening at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. 
 
The Braves (3-5, 3-3 MEC) improve to 6-1 all-time against West Virginia State with Saturday's victory and have now won all three contests at home against WVSU. The Yellow Jackets (5-3, 4-2 MEC) have now lost their last two contests and fall to 2-2 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
West Virginia State's Nick Blake intercepted Colin Johnson's pass to start the Yellow Jacket drive on the UNCP 38-yard line. Joel Felder ran the ball for the first four plays of the drive highlighted bya 17-yard gain. The Yellow Jackets would have settle for a 25-yard field goal from Brennen Schmitt. WVSU 3, UNCP 0

West Virginia State forced UNC Pembroke to a three and out where the Yellow Jackets started their drive on their own 18-yard line. Carlo Thompson intercepted a pass from Isaiah Bess, where Thompson returned it for a 24-yard touchdown. UNCP 7, WVSU 3
 
Isaiah Bess completed a pass for a gain of 16 yards to Quientin Williams followed by a 10-yard run from Justin Pessoa. Bess completed a pass to Williams for a gain of eight yards before Joel Felder broke through the middle of the defense for a 22-yard touchdown run. WVSU 10, UNCP 7
 
Colin Johnson found an open JaQuan Albright for a gain of 16-yards, followed by a pair of runs from Albright. Johnson connected with Jo Hayes in the middle of the field, where Hayes found the endzone after a 61-yard run. UNCP 14, WVSU 10
2ND QUARTER
Carlo Thompson forced a fumble from Isaiah Bess, where Thompson recovered the ball on the West Virginia 23-yard line. Colin Johnson completed a short pass up the middle to Jo Hayes who broke free of the defense for a 22-yard touchdown run. UNCP 21, WVSU 10
 
Jamae Blank sacked Caleb Jantuah for a loss of nine yards where the ball was fumbled and recovered by Isi Etute for UNCP to start the offensive drive on the West Virginia State 15-yard line. JaQuan Kelly rushed down the right side for a gain of 11-yard followed by a one-yard run up the middle. Kelly ran the ball into the endzone for a UNCP touchdown. UNCP 27, WVSU 10
 
Carlo Thompson sacked Caleb Jantuah on fourth down to give the Braves the ball on the WVSU 46-yard line. Colin Johnson rushed up the middle to set up a deep pass to Jo Hayes for a 20-yard touchdown. UNCP 34, WVSU 10
 
West Virginia State attempted a 42-yard field goal attempt which was no good where the hosts took over on their own 25-yard line. Colin Johnson completed a pair of passes to JaQuan Albright for a total gain of 31-yards, followed by a 13-yard run down the left side from Johnson. Johnson completed a pass down the left side to Sincere Baines who ran the ball 32-yards for a touchdown. UNCP 41, WVSU 10
 
Joel Felder broke through the defense for a gain of 16-yards followed by an 8-yard run from Justin Pessoa. Caleb Jantuah completed a deep pass to Amare Ary for a 23-yard touchdown as time expired for the half. UNCP 41, WVSU 17
3RD QUARTER
The Braves started the half with a Sincere Baines 21-yard run down the right sideline, followed by a Colin Johnson pass to Baines for an additional 11-yard gain. Jayden Smith caught a pass in the middle of the field for a gain of 29-yard to set up Baines for an 18-yard touchdown run. UNCP 48, WVSU 17
 
The UNCP defense limited WVSU to three and out where the Braves took over on their own 26-yard line. Johnson rushed down the left side for a gain of 9-yards followed by a run from Sincere Baines. Baines took off down the right side for a 61-yard touchdown. UNCP 55, WVSU 17
4TH QUARTER
JaQuan Albright got the drive started with a 10-yard run, followed by a 29-yard gain via a Colin Johnson pass completion to Jo Hayes. Johnson found an open Jayden Smith for an additional 11-yards followed by a an 18-yard run up the middle from JaQuan Kelley. Albright worked through the defense for a four-yard touchdown run. UNCP 62, WVSU 17
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Colin Johnson completed 15 passes for 309 yards and was responsible for four touchdowns. The redshirt senior also ran the ball seven times for a gain of 48 yards. 
+  Sincere Baines ran the ball six times for 124 total yards, including two touchdowns. 
+ Jo Hayes caught five passes for 139 yards and a trio of touchdowns. The graduate student also ran back a pair of punt returns for 12 yards. 
+ Carlo Thompson finished with six tackles, four of which were solo tackles. The newcomer also had one tackle for a loss of eight yards, one sack for a loss of eight yards, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. 
+ Jamae Blank had a pair of tackles for a loss of 16 yards and forced one fumble. 
NOTABLES
+ The Braves finished Saturday's contest with 589 total yards of offense. UNCP threw for 309 yards and ran the ball for 280 yards. 
+ UNC Pembroke's defense limited West Virginia State to just 264 yards of total offense. 
+ The Black & Gold have now won the last nine homecoming games.
