Football Breaks Record, Downs West Virginia Wesleyan On American Indian Heritage Day

PEMBROKE - The UNC Pembroke football team broke the school record for most points scored in a half and in a single game with a 79-20 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday for American Indian Heritage Day inside of Grace P. Johnson Stadium. 
 
The Braves (4-5, 4-3 MEC) have now won their last three home games and are averaging 55.0 points per game when playing at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. The Bobcats (0-9, 0-6 MEC) fall to 1-5 all-time against UNCP and have now lost their last four contests to the Braves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke's defense forced West Virginia Wesleyan to just three plays before having to punt where UNCP took over on their own 38-yard line. Caleb Locklear ran the ball for the first three plays for a total of 14 yards. Colin Johnson completed a pass to the left to JaQuan Albright for a gain of 17 yards before Albright caught a pass from Johnson for a 13-yard touchdown. UNCP 7, WVWC 0
 
The Bobcats were held to just three plays again where the Braves took over on the West Virginia Wesleyan 45-yard line. Colin Johnson completed a pair of passes to Que Kennedy for a total of 27 yards on the drive. Sincere Baines moved the offense down the field with a run of eight yards to set up Johnson for a seven-yard pass to JaQuan Albright for a touchdown. UNCP 14, WVWC 0
 
Quinton Pulley completed a pass in the middle of the field to Wesley Sweeney, but Evan VanMeter forced a fumble that was recovered by UNCP's Jakori Hood on the West Virginia Wesleyan 36-yard line. JaQuan Kelly broke through the defense for a gain of 15 yards and then rushed down the right side for a 23-yard touchdown. UNCP 21, WVWC 0
2ND QUARTER
The Braves ended the first quarter by forcing West Virginia Wesleyan to punt again after three offensive plays. Colin Johnson ran the ball for a gain of seven yards followed by a pair of runs to the right from JaQuan Kelly for a total of 13 yards. Johnson connected with Jo Hayes to move the offense eight yards followed by a deep pass from Johnson to Que Kennedy for a 22-yard touchdown. UNCP 28, WVWC 0
 
Nathan Payne rushed to the left for a gain of eight yards, but Malik McKinzie forced a fumble that was recovered by UNC Pembroke's Marquis Raspberry on the West Virginia Wesleyan 30-yard line where Raspberry took it to the endzone. UNCP 35, WVWC 0

Jaiden Nesbit intercepted a pass from Nathan Payne where Nesbit took it to the endzone for a 47-yard touchdown. UNCP 42, WVWC 0
 
Nathan Payne completed a pass to Kevon Lawson for a gain of 49-yard followed by a nine-yard completion from Payne to Deion King. Payne connected with Kyri Beamon in the endzone for a five-yard touchdown. UNCP 42, WVWC 7
 
Sincere Baines started the offensive drive with a 15-yard run down the right sideline, followed by four-straight runs from Baines for a total of 40 additional yards. Colin Johnson completed a pass in the middle of the field to Josh Jenkins for a 20-yard touchdown. UNCP 49, WVWC 7
 
The UNCP defense limited West Virginia Wesleyan to just three plays before forcing the Bobcats to punt where the Braves started the drive on their own 41-yard line. Sincere Baines and Colin Johnson each ran the ball for six yards apiece before Johnson connected with Que Kennedy for a gain of 20 yards. Baines broke free from the defense and rushed up the middle for a gain of 20 yards followed by a JaQuan Albright run up the middle for a seven-yard touchdown. UNCP 56, WVWC 7

3RD QUARTER
Colin Johnson completed a pass to Jo Hayes for 13 yards before Sincere Baines shook off the defense for a 10-yard run. Baines took off down the right side of the field for a 52-yard touchdown run. UNCP 63, WVWC 7
 
West Virginia Wesleyan started their drive on their own 12-yard line. UNCP's defense forced a safety following an intentional grounding call. UNCP 65, WVWC 7. 
 
Jo Hayes muffed the kickoff return which was recovered by Anthony Francis to give the ball back to WVWC on the UNCP 35-yard line. Nathan Payne completed a short pass to Wesley Sweeney for a gain of 12 yard to set up a deep pass from Payne to Joseph Triplett in the endzone for a 23-yard touchdown. UNCP 65, WVWC 13
 
Que Kennedy returned the kickoff 27 yards where UNC Pembroke started its drive on their own 28-yard line. JaQuan Kelly ran the ball for the first three plays for a total of 23-yards followed by a 19-yard pass completion from Colin Johnson to JaQuan Albright. Kelly rushed to the right for a gain of 12 yards and then rushed down the right sideline for an 18-yard touchdown. UNCP 72, WVWC 13
 
Nathan Payne completed a nine-yard pass to Immanuel Scott, followed by a two-yard run from Raphael Manning. Payne found an open Wesley Sweeney for a 38-yard touchdown pass. UNCP 72, WVWC 20
4TH QUARTER
Tre Robinson broke through the defense for a seven-yard gain followed by a 14-yard completion from Caleb Locklear to Jo Hayes. Sincere Baines ran down the left side of the field for a gain of eight yards to allow a Locklear completion to Hayes for an additional 15 yards. Locklear and Hayes connected again, this time for a 22-yard touchdown. UNCP 79, WVWC 20
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Colin Johnson completed 11 of 18 passes for 166 yards. The redshirt senior threw for four touchdowns and ran the ball five times for a total of 21 yards.
+ Caleb Locklear was a perfect 3-for-3 on pass attempts for 51 yards and one touchdown. The Pembroke native ran the ball four times for 14 yards as well. 
+ JaQuan Albright and JaQuan Kelly each were responsible for two touchdowns. 
+ Carlo Thompson finished with six total tackles, five of which were solo tackles. He had one sack for a loss of six yards.
+ Jamae Blank broke up four passes and had one interception for 15 yards. Malik McKinzie tallied three tackles and forced one fumble while also breaking up a pass. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke combined for 594-yards of offense. 
+ The Black & Gold's defense combined for 16 points during Saturday's game while holding West Virginia Wesleyan to 222 total offensive yards. 
+ Caleb Locklear's ceremonial start marked the first American Indian starting quarterback in the history of the program.
+ To culminate American Indian Heritage Day, Senior Ms. Lumbee, Carolyn McNeill Emmanuel, sang the National Anthem, vendors were set up on the concourse, tribal dances were performed, and the spirit squad wore red bows for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
