Joll, Buonocore Take Major Awards, Braves Send Four To All-Conference Team

February 16, 2024

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The 6th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team raked in a bevy of awards Friday afternoon when the Braves saw Scott Joll named Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Year,  Avery Buonocore named Freshman of the Year, and sent four student-athletes – Joll (1st Team), Keegan Roberson (1st) Logan Seliga (2nd), and Jake Piccirilli (2nd)  – to All-Conference Carolinas honors.

The announcement marked the fifth-straight year that the Black & Gold has had three or more wrestlers decorated with all-conference nods. It is the fourth career all-conference honor for Seliga, as well as the second time Piccirilli has earned a selection. Joll becomes just the second Brave to be named his conference's Wrestler of the Year, joining Blaze Shade who took home ECAC Wrestler of the Year honors during the 2015-16 season. Buonocore joins UNCP assistant coach, Nick Daggett, as the only two Braves to have been named Freshman of the Year.

A native of Belle Vernon, Pa., Joll closed out the regular season with a perfect 24-0 record, including a 5-0 mark against ranked opponents. The graduate student was 9-0 in Conference Carolinas action, and racked up 15 pins and five tech. falls. Joll was the 174-pound champion at the prestigious Midwest Classic in December, and enters Conference Carolinas Wrestling Championship action as the #1-ranked wrestler in his weight class.

The redshirt junior took champion honors at 125 pounds in the 42nd Annual Pembroke Classic, and is currently ranked fifth in his weight class.

A Woodstock, Ga. native and 149 pounder, Piccirilli put together a 21-2 regular season, including a 7-1 mark in conference action. The junior has racked up 18 bonus point victories, to go along with a first-place finish at the Georgia Open and an eighth-place finish at the Midwest Classic. Piccirilli is currently the fifth-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds.

Roberson, a Chicago, Ill. product and 157 pounder, heads into the Conference Championship with a 28-5 record, including a 6-1 clip in league action.
