No. 20 Men’s Basketball Falls To Chowan In Overtime

PEMBROKE. – The 20th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team held the lead with five seconds remaining in regulation, but Preston Le Gassick's 3-pointer sent the game into overtime, as Chowan would go on to win 82-75 during Wednesday night's regular season finale at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The setback for the Braves (21-6, 15-3 CC) snap a five-game winning streak and mark just the second loss this season in Pembroke. The victory for the Hawks (19-8, 13-5 CC) pushes their win streak out to six games and is the first conference victory against UNCP in the six meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke shot 42.9 percent from the floor and took 10-6 lead following an Elijah Cobb dunk at the 14:32 mark. Chowan put together a 7-0 run to knot the score at 14 apiece with a layup from RJ Wilson with just under 10 minutes left to play in the half. A 10-2 run from UNCP gave the hosts their largest lead of the night, 24-16, with a fast break layup from Javonte Waverly with 7:06 on the clock.  Chowan closed out the half on a 12-6 run, but a layup from Cortez Marion-Holmes at the buzzer sent the teams to the locker rooms with the Braves holding a slight 30-28 lead. 
2ND HALF
Chowan took its first lead of the half, 35-34, following a fast break layup from Skyler Davies, but UNC Pembroke would score the next four points to retake a 38-35 lead with a fast break layup from Cortez Marion-Holmes at the 15 minute mark. The Braves used an 8-0 run that stretched to the nine-minute mark to give the hosts a 51-46 lead with a layup from Elijah Cobb. Bradlee Haskell knocked down a pair of free throws to give UNCP a 66-61 advantage, but Chowan's Preston Le Gassick scored the final six points for the Hawks including a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. 
OVERTIME
Chowan scored the first nine points of overtime to take a 76-67 lead with just 1:27 left on the clock. JaJuan Carr's bucket trimmed the Braves deficit back to 78-71 with 34 seconds remaining, but the Hawks shot 60 percent from the field to secure the win. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bradlee Haskell scored a game-high 20 points following a 6-for-14 shooting clip. The junior dished out four assists and pulled down three rebounds in 32 minutes of action.
+ Javonte Waverly came off of the bench to add 15 points on a 6-for-16 shooting night. Waverly grabbed five rebounds, have a pair of assists, and one block and steal. 
+ JaJuan Carr and Cortez Marion-Holmes each finished with nine points and nine rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke was limited to just 39.1-percent shooting. It was the worst shooting performance in the last six games. 
+ The Braves scored 26 points in transition. 
+ The Black & Gold posted a 42-30 advantage with points in the paint. However, the Hawks outscore the Braves 15-8 with second chance points. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 67.7 percent of Wednesday's contest.  
UP NEXT
The Braves will now turn their attention to the Conference Carolinas Tournament. UNCP will enter the tournament as the top seed and will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m.
