Men’s Basketball Topples King

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team held the lead for all but 41 seconds and scored 32 points in transition on the way to a 97-63 victory over King on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (10-4, 8-0 CC) have now won their last nine games and improve to 5-1 when playing at home this season. The Tornado (5-9, 3-3 CC) have now lost their last two games and are just 1-4 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
King took what would be its last lead of the contest, 5-4, following a layup from Mikhail Pocknett at the 18:26 mark, but UNC Pembroke would put together an 8-3 run capped off with a jumper from Bradlee Haskell to lead 12-8 with 14:33 remaining in the opening half. The Braves took a double-digit lead, 22-11, after a 10-3 surge following a running layup from JaJuan Carr with 11 minutes remaining in the period. King cut its deficit back to 25-17 with a bucket from Jordan Akal, but the Braves outscored the Tornado 26-11 over the final minutes to hold a commanding 51-28 advantage as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
UNCP started the half on an 11-2 run to pad its lead, 62-30, following a pair of free throws from Dallas Gardner at the 17:35 mark. King tried to cut into its deficit, 70-34, with a bucket from Mikhail Pocknett, but the hosts took its largest lead, 81-40, following an 11-6 run polished off with a layup from Bradlee Haskell with 8:21 remaining in regulation. The Tornado answered with a 17-7 run to trail 88-57 after a fastbreak jumper from Travis Easterly with 4:20 remaining. UNCP shot 43.2 percent from the floor during the period and  outscored King 7-6 in the final minutes to secure the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Dallas Gardner finished with a game0high 16 points on a 4-for-8 shooting performance. The sophomore pulled down five rebounds as well in 16 minutes of work. 
+ Joe'l Pettiford turned in a 15-point showing with a 6-for-9 clip from the field. Pettiford grabbed six rebounds and had a pair of blocks.
+ Quay Watson came off of the bench to finish with a career-high 14 points in 30 minutes of work. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 47.3 percent from the field and held King to 39.7 percent shooting. IT is the fifth time this season King has been held under 40 percent shooting.
+ The Braves held the lead for 39:04 minutes of Saturday's victory. 
+ The Black & Gold saw success in transition scoring 32 fast break points.
+ UNCP outscored King 58-30 with points in the paint, while also scoring 23 points from King's 16 turnovers.
UP NEXT
The Braves will travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., on Wednesday to battle Chowan in a key Conference Carolinas contest. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Bob Burke Court.
