Men’s Basketball Falls At Chowan

MURFREESBORO – Chowan shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half and held a six-point lead with just over three minutes remaining, as the UNC Pembroke men's basketball teams last second shot at the buzzer was blocked to give the Hawks an 88-87 victory on Wednesday evening at Bob Burke Court.

The setback for the Braves (10-5, 8-1 CC) snapped a nine-game winning streak and marks their first loss in league play. Wednesday's victory for the Hawks (9-4, 6-1 CC) marked the first win at home against UNCP in the series and pushed their win streak out to six games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Chowan used a jumper from RJ Wilson to take a 14-8 advantage at the 15:43 mark, but four straight points from UNC Pembroke cut the UNCP deficit back to 14-12 with a jumper from JaJuan Carr just two minutes later. The Hawks took what would be their largest lead of the contest, 22-14, halfway through the frame, but the Braves would trail just 22-20 after a 6-0 run with 8:12 remaining in the half. The Braves took their first lead of the contest, 27-26, with a Bradlee Haskell free throw at 5:44, but the Hawks scored the next five points to lead 31-27. Both teams shot better than 45 percent from the floor during the period, but UNC Pembroke outscored Chowan 15-10 in the final minutes to hold a slight 42-41 advantage as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke pushed its lead out to 51-45 with a fast break dunk from JaJuan Carr just three minutes into the half, but Chowan took the next five points to trail 51-50 at the 16-minute mark. An old-fashioned three-point play from Bradlee Haskell put UNCP out in front 63-61 with 11:39 remaining, but an 8-1 Chowan run put the hosts ahead 69-64 with 8-1/2 minutes on the clock. A triple from Bradlee Haskell capped off a 10-2 surge for UNCP to give the Braves a 74-71 advantage, but a three-point play from Daylan Askew tied the score at 74 apiece moments later. Chowan held a lead as large as six points with three minutes remaining, but UNCP clawed back and trailed 88-87 after a jumper from JaJuan Carr with 50 seconds left. The Braves forced a Chowan turnover with 11 seconds on the clock, but the final shot from UNCP was blocked as time expired.
