Men’s Basketball Rights Ship, Downs Belmont Abbey

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 55.6 percent from the field and scored 40 points in the paint on the way to an 82-60 victory over Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (11-5, 9-1 CC) have now won their last six home contests and improve to 16-1 all-time when playing Belmont Abbey in Pembroke. The Crusaders (1-10, 0-8 CC) have now lost their last seven games and fall to 0-4 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Belmont Abbey took what would be its largest lead of the contest, 10-4, with a triple from Khamani Wertz just three minutes into the action, but UNC Pembroke answered with a 10-0 run to take a 14-10 advantage with a triple from Josh Berenbaum at the 14-minute mark. Judah Sault made good on a layup from work the Crusaders deficit back to 19-16, but Dallas Gardner started the Braves on a 16-2 surge to give the hosts a 25-18 lead with 4:07 remaining in the half. BAC worked its deficit back to 36-26 with a triple from Khamani Wertz with 1:08 remaining in the half, but UNCP shot 56.0 percent from the field during the period and held a 38-26 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
Belmont Abbey used an 8-0 run to chip away at its deficit, 47-39 with a fastbreak layup from Judah Sault at the 15:50 mark. UNC Pembroke answered with a 12-0 run capped off with a fastbreak layup from JaJuan Carr to give the hosts a 59-39 advantage with 12:23 on the clock. The Crusaders whittle their deficit back to 61-43 with a layup from Khamani Wertz with 8:42 on the clock, but 16-9 run from UNCP gave the hosts their largest lead of the night, 77-52, with a triple from Quay Watson with four minutes remaining in regulation. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bradlee Haskell finished with 15 points and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. The senior had a trio of assists, two steals, one rebound and one block in 27 minutes of action. 
+ Dallas Gardner also had 15 points highlighted by a 5-for-8 clip from the field. 
+ JaJuan Carr turned in a 13-point showing with three rebounds, two steals and a block. 
+ Josh Berenbaum was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to add a dozen points. The senior grabbed six defensive rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 55.6 percent from the field. It was the best shooting performance since shooting 55.9 percent from the floor against Shorter on Dec. 17.
+ The Braves held a 40-14 advantage with points in the paint. UNCP also scored 22 points from 19 Belmont Abbey turnovers. 
+ The Black & Gold had five players score in double-figures. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 87.3 percent (34:55) of Saturday's victory.
