Second Half Surge Helps Converse By Men’s Basketball

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Converse shot nearly 60-percent from the field in the second half and finished with 29 points from 20 UNC Pembroke turnovers to help fuel a 76-68 victory over the Braves on Saturday afternoon inside the Tom & Tracy Hannah Gym. 
 
The Braves (11-6, 9-2 CC) have now lost two out of their last three contests and are 5-4 this season when playing on the road. The victory for the Valkyries (7-9, 5-5 CC) marked the first win in the seven-game series against UNCP and are now 6-5 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Converse took a 19-10 lead following a made free throw from Leonardo Da Campo at the 12-minute mark, but a triple from Elijah Cobb sent UNC Pembroke on an 18-0 run to gain a 29-19 lead capped off with a layup from Josh Berenbaum with 8:23 remaining in the opening period. Quay Watson knocked down a 3-pointer to extend the UNCP lead out to 34-22, but four-straight points from Jay Mitchell cut the Converse deficit back to 34-26 with 5:52 on the clock. The Braves closed out the half on an 8-3 run to hold a 42-29 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
Converse scored the first six points of the half to chip away at its deficit, 42-35, but a layup from Joe'l Pettiford stopped the run as UNCP held a slight 44-35 lead just two minutes into the period. A jumper from Bradlee Haskell cushioned the UNC Pembroke lead, 48-39, at the 14:38 mark, but Converse answered with a 6-0 run to make it a one possession game, 48-46, with 11:30 left to play in regulation. Dallas Gardner made good on a layup to push the Braves lead out to 53-49, but the Valkyries put together an 11-1 surge to lead 63-54 with 5:22 on the clock following a jumper from Joel Pullen. UNCP scored four points in a row to work its deficit back to 65-60 with a jumper from Josh Berenbaum with 2:55 left to play, but the hosts outscored the Braves 11-8 in the final minutes to hold onto the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Elijah Cobb nearly registered a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Cobb went 7-for-8 from the field in 31 minutes of work.
+ Bradlee Haskell added 15 points in 28 minutes of action. The senior also had four rebounds three assists, and a pair of steals. 
+ JaJuan Carr finished with seven points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals nad one block in 33 minutes of action. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 47.4 percent from the field, while Converse finished the game shooting 45.5 percent. However, the Valkyries shot 57.7 percent in the second half while the Braves were limited to just 38.5 percent shooting in the second half. 
+ Converse finished Saturday's game going 19-for-30 from the free throw line, while UNCP was just 7-for-19 from the charity stripe. 
+ The Black & Gold outscored Converse 40-28 with points in the paint. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will close out their road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Wilson to lock horns with Barton. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside Wilson Gymnasium.
