Men’s Basketball Topples Barton

WILSON – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball was firing on all cylinders on Wednesday evening shooting 61.2 percent from the field and having six players score in double figures to highlight a 97-65 victory over Barton inside the Wilson Gymnasium.
 
The Braves (12-6, 10-2 CC) have now won the last nine meetings against Barton. The Bulldogs (10-10, 6-6 CC) have now lost their last two contest and are 7-4 when playing at home this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Shawn Nelson scored the first eight points for Barton to give the Bulldogs what would be its largest lead of the contest, 8-3, but a 9-0 run for UNC Pembroke put the Braves out in front 12-8 following a fastbreak layup from Dallas Gardner five minutes into the game. The hosts made it a one possession game, 17-15, via a layup from Trey Fields at the 12-minute mark, but the Braves put together a 13-0 run that stretched to the six-minute mark to push their lead out to 30-15. UNCP shot 57.6 percent from the floor during the period outscored Barton 12-11 to close out the half and send the teams to the locker room with UNC Pembroke holding a commanding 42-26 advantage. 
2ND HALF
An old-fashioned three-point play from Joe'l Pettiford followed by a three from the top of the key from Josh Berenbaum cushioned the UNC Pembroke lead, 66-40 with 12:51 remaining in regulation. Barton used an 8-1 run to whittle its deficit back to 67-48, but the Braves answered with a 12-4 run to push their lead out to 79-52 after a dunk from JaJuan Carr with 6:19 on the clock. The hosts stopped the surge with a pair of free throws, but UNCP opened up a 16-4 run to take its largest lead of the night, 95-58, with a triple in transition from Bradlee Haskell with just 2:25 left to play. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Dallas Gardner posted a double-double with a team-best 18 points and added 11 rebounds. 
+ Elijah Cobb also logged a double-double with 14 points and a team-best 12 rebounds. 
+ JaJuan Carr chipped in 16 points on a 7-for-9 shooting clip, while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists. 
+ Joe'l Pettiford added 15 points on a 7-for-8 shooting performance. The newcomer and five rebounds and one block. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 61.2 percent from the field during Wednesday's victory. It is the best shooting performance of the season since the Braves shot 61.7 percent against Belmont Abbey on Nov. 26. 
+ The Black & Gold held a 62-24 advantage with points in the paint. 
+ UNCP also posted a 47-25 advantage in rebounds. 
+ The Braves held the lead for 89.1 percent of Wednesday's contest. 
+ UNC Pembroke did not trail after the 17:01 in the first half.

The Braves will be back in action on Saturday when they play host to Emmanuel for Coaches vs. Cancer and Alumni Weekend presented by Scotland Health Care. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
