PEMBROKE – 19th-ranked UNC Pembroke held an 18-10 lead after six matches, but Newberry would take three of the last four bouts to claim a 22-21 win in Conference Carolinas dual action Tuesday night on Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The Braves (7-5, 5-1 CC) fell to 7-12 all-time in the series with the Wolves (7-7, 4-2 CC). 

Joey Bruscino gave the Braves an early lead with a third-period pin at 125 pounds, before Newberry would follow with a pin at 133 pounds and a major decision in the 141-pound bout. Fifth-ranked Jake Piccirilli put the Black & Gold back in front with a first-period pin, while third-ranked Keegan Roberson (157 pounds) and Will Lowery (165) added decision wins to stretch the lead to 18-10. Three straight Newberry wins, including a pivotal pin at 197 pounds gave the guests a 22-18 advantage heading into the heavyweight bout. Oggie Atwood picked up a sudden victory for the Braves, but would not be enough to take the match. 

The Black & Gold will be back in action Friday, January 24 as they host Mount Olive for Senior Night & Alumni Weekend. Wrestling action is set to begin at 7 p.m., with Senior Night festivities set to take place before the match.
