Late Surge Helps Men’s Basketball By Barton

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 57.9 percent from the floor in the second half and made key free throws down the stretch to defeat Barton 83-77 on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (9-4, 7-0 CC) have now won their last eight contests and improve to 4-1 when playing in Pembroke this season. The Bulldogs (7-7, 3-4 CC) fall to 0-5 when playing on the road this season and have now lost the last eight meetings against UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with a layup from JaJuan Carr, but Barton would use a 10-2 surge to lead 10-7 after a jumper from Sean Quick-Streeter with 12 minutes on the clock. Quay Watson knotted the score at 10 with a 3-pointer, but the Bulldogs put together a 10-0 run to take what would be their largest lead of the night, 20-10 after a pair of free throws from Chris Nobles halfway through the period. The Braves went on a 17-2 run capped off with a free throw from JaJuan Carr to tie the score at 27 apiece with 2:57 on the clock. The hosts outscored Barton 6-5 to end the half with UNC Pembroke holding a slight 33-32 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
The Braves started the half on an 11-3 run to take their largest lead of the contest, 44-35, following a layup from JaJuan Carr just under two minutes into the frame. Barton was able to trim its deficit back to 48-45, after a triple from Nygie Stroman at the 14:40 mark, but UNCP scored the next five points to pad its lead 53-45 with 12:59 on the clock. Barton put together a 16-4 run to gain a 61-57 lead after a three from Trey Crews with nine minutes remaining in regulation, and would eventually stretch its lead out to 72-66 following a fastbreak layup from Trey Crews with six minutes on the clock. However, the Braves used a 13-2 surge down the stretch capped off with a three from the top of the key from Dallas Gardner with 55 seconds on the clock to give the hosts a 79-74 lead. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Dallas Gardner scored a game and career-high 32 points on an 8-for-13 shooting performance. The sophomore nearly recorded a double-double pulling down eight rebounds.
+ JaJuan Carr turned in a 19-point showing on a 5-for-9 clip from the field. The senior had a trio of rebounds and assists, while also adding one block and one steal.
+ Josh Berenbaum came off of the bench to add seven points and five rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 46.7 percent from the floor, highlighted by a game-best 57.8 percent shooting in the second half.
+ The Braves scored 22 points in transition and 17 points from 15 Barton turnovers. 
+ The Black & Gold made good on 33-of-40 free throw attempts. The Bulldogs were 17-of-21 from the charity stripe.
