Volleyball Rallies, Downs Shorter In Five Sets

ROME, Ga. – A strong presence at the net highlighted by 12 blocks helped the UNC Pembroke volleyball team to a 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19, 15-8) victory over Shorter on Saturday afternoon inside the Winthrop-King Centre. 

The Braves (12-10, 9-5 CC) hit a match-best .438 in the fifth set and are now 4-6 when playing on the road this season. The setback for the Hawks (14-9, 11-4 CC) have now lost their last three contests and are 6-3 when playing on their home court.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 20-25 UNC Pembroke started the match taking an early 5-0 lead, highlighted by two service aces from Alexandria Mills. Shorter responded with a series of kills from Ava Medina and Victoria Sparks to knot the score at 7-7. The Braves surged ahead again with a block from Tyler Patterson, but Shorter went on a decisive run, capitalizing on attack errors by the Braves to take a 21-16 lead. Despite a late effort from Abby Peduzzi, who recorded a kill to bring the score to 24-20, Shorter secured the set 25-20 with a kill from Taylor-Reese Howell.
SET 2 I 25-19 The Braves surged ahead early, with Patterson contributing a service ace and a block during a 7-1 run. Savannah Whaley and McKenna Hayes added key kills to build momentum. The Hawks closed the gap with a series of kills, but UNCP capitalized on errors, extending their lead with a kill by Alexandria Mills
SET 3 I 18-25 In the third set, the Braves initially took control with Savannah Whaley recording three consecutive kills to establish a 3-0 lead. Shorter responded with a series of points, capitalizing on attack errors by the Braves to tie the score at 3-3. The teams traded points until the Hawks gained momentum with a 5-1 run, featuring kills from Caroline Sivills and Acca Berube, pushing the score to 12-15. The Hawks maintained their lead, with Sparks contributing a key service ace, and ultimately closed the set at 25-18 following a decisive kill by Audrey Brooks.
SET 4 I 25-19 After an early back-and-forth, the Braves capitalized on a series of errors by the Hawks to take an 18-16 lead. Abby Peduzzi and Alexandria Mills contributed key kills, with Abby Peduzzi tallying multiple points to keep the visitors ahead. McKenna Hayes played a crucial role in the closing moments, with blocks leading to errors from Shorter and sealing the set with a final attack error by the hosts.
SET 5 I 15-8 The fifth set saw the Braves assert early dominance with a quick 5-0 lead, capitalizing on service errors and effective kills. Savannah Whaley opened the scoring with a kill, followed by a kill from Tyler Patterson. Shorter responded with a brief rally, including a kill by Sivills and a service ace from Medina, narrowing the gap to 5-2. However, the UNCP lead extended as McKenna Hayes and Addie Decker delivered key points, bringing the score to 9-2 with the Hawks unable to sustain momentum.

The Braves will trek to Augusta on Tuesday for a tri-match with former Peach Belt Conference foes USC Aiken and Augusta. UNCP will play USC Aiken at 4 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. match against Augusta inside the Christenberry Fieldhouse.
