Men’s Basketball Hosts Lander Sunday For Home Opener

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team will make its home debut on Sunday when they host former Peach Belt Conference foe Lander. Tipoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. at Lumbee Guarnaty Bank Court. 
 
Fans unable to make the trip to Pembroke can still follow the game for free via a live video stream on the UNCP Sports Network with Alex Inbornone handling play-by-play duties. The matchup can also be followed via live statistics links provided by UNC Pembroke. Series Notes
Sunday marks the 62nd time the two teams have met, with UNC Pembroke holding a 31-30 advantage in head-to-head matchups. UNCP has won 10 out of the last 11 meetings including a 93-74 victory last season on Nov. 10 in Greenwood, S.C. The Braves have also captured the last four outings when playing in Pembroke. 
Scouting Reports
UNC Pembroke
  • UNC Pembroke suffered a 75-72 setback at USC Aiken on Friday. The Braves trailed by as many as 18, but rallied to keep the game close, including getting the ball back with 14 seconds left for a chance to tie the game. 
  • UNCP struggled to get this going in the first half against the Pacers shooting just 29.4 percent. However, the Black & Gold outscored USC Aiken 45-30 in the second half and shot 56.2 percent from the floor.
  • The Braves scored 42 points in the paint during Friday's contest. 
  • Newcomer Moe Bangura made his debut for the Black & Gold flirting with a triple-double with 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks. Bangura played 33 minutes and finished the game with a game-high in all three of those categories. 
Lander
  • Lander opened the season on Friday escaping with a 69-68 victory at home over Catawba. The Bearcats held a lead as large as 10 late in the second half. However, Catawba gained a one-point lead with four minutes on the clock but back-to-back layups for Lander on the next two possessions sealed the outcome. 
  • The Bearcats shot 47.3 from the field and were 9-of-23 from the three point line.
  • Lander committed 19 turnovers to which Catawba scored 23 points. 
  • Terry Leonard Jr. scored a team-best 17 points on a 7-for-13 clip and pulled down three rebounds in 34 minutes of action.
