Lander Holds Off Men's Basketball

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball took a five point lead late in the second half, but Lander shot 52.1 percent from the field in the second half and made 17 of its 23 attempts from the free throw line to key an 80-74 victory over the Braves on Sunday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The setback for the Braves (0-2) marked the first home loss to Lander since a 62-59 setback on Dec. 5, 2015. The Bearcats (2-0) snapped a three-game skid against UNCP and have now won two out of the last five matchups.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The game started with Lander taking an early lead thanks to two free throws by Jacob Daniels at the 19:17 mark. UNC Pembroke responded with a layup from Joe'l Pettiford, leveling the score at 2-2. Lander's Greyson Pritzl hit a crucial 3-pointer with 16:01 remaining, giving the Bearcats a 7-6 lead. As the half progressed, Lander extended their advantage with Antewan Webber Jr. contributing a 3-pointer at 7:29, pushing the score to 24-11. Despite the UNCP efforts, including a 3-pointer by Tyrese Melo-Garcia at 3:06, Lander maintained their lead, closing the first half with a 36-24 advantage.
2ND HALF
Lander added to its lead, 41-28, on a pair of free throws from Terry Leonard, Jr., at the 17 minute mark. Dallas Whitney started UNCP on a 15-0 run highlighted by Javonte Waverly to give the Braves a 52-47 lead with 11:12 remaining in the period. Both teams traded baskets, but an 8-0 run for the Bearcats pushed their lead out to 71-62 with under four minutes left on the clock. Javonte Waverly knocked down a triple with under a minute to go to keep it a one possession game, but Lander responded with a three to seal the  outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Javonte Waverly finished the game with a career and game-high 29 points highlighted by a 5-for-9 clip from the perimeter. Waverly also pulled down seven rebounds and had one assist in 34 minutes of action.
+ Moe Bangura chipping in 13 points and was 5-for-12 from the field, while grabbing six rebounds.
+ Joe'l Pettiford added a dozen points while also tallying eight boards. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 39.7 percent from the field, while Lander shot 50 percent for the game.
+ The Braves shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half. 
+ The Black & Gold got outscored 32-28 with points in the paint.
