Men's Basketball Downs Fayetteville State

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball shot 55.6 percent from the field to open the game and picked up 28 points from its bench on the way to an 84-75 victory over Fayetteville State on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (1-2) have now won the last six meetings against Fayetteville State when playing in Pembroke. The Broncos (1-2) have now won just one out of the last 12 matchups against UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The contest between UNC Pembroke and Fayetteville State started with a fast break dunk by Javonte Waverly giving the hosts an early lead. The Broncos tied the game at 5-5 with a layup by Kenneth Brayboy at the 16:11 mark. However, UNC Pembroke gained momentum midway through the half, highlighted by a three-pointer from Javonte Waverly and a series of scoring plays by Tahj Johnson and Tyrese Melo-Garcia. Dallas Whitney contributed significantly, including a pair of three-pointers. As the half closed, Fayetteville State's Ezekiel Cannedy hit a three-pointer with one second remaining, but UNC Pembroke held a commanding 43-24 lead at the end of the first half.
2ND HALF
Fayetteville State cut its deficit back to 51-38 with a jumper from Larry Howell at the 14:56 mark. However, UNC Pembroke shot 57.1 percent from the field during the period and used four free throws from Moe Bangura to extend the lead 73-53 with 5:40 remaining. A 9-0 run for the Broncos cut the deficit back to 74-62 with four minutes left in regulation, but the Braves held onto the lead. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Javonte Waverly finished the game-high 23 points on a 9-for-12 shooting performance. The senior pulled down four rebounds as well in 35 minutes of action. 
+ Moe Bangura turned in a career-high 18 points highlighted by an 11-for-14 clip from the free throw line. Bangura pulled down five rebounds, had four assists, two blocks and one steal in 28 minutes.
+ Newcomer Dallas Whitney added 11 points highlighted by a 3-for-6 showing from the perimeter. Whitney grabbed four defensive rebounds, dished out three assists and added one block in 23 minutes of work. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 56.3 percent from the field while Fayetteville State shot 40.4 percent from the floor. Both teams shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the second half.
+ UNCP picked up success in the transition game tallying 24 points from fast breaks, while the FSU was held to 12 points in transition. 
+ The Black & Gold outscored the Broncos 34-26 with points inside the paint.
