Men's Basketball Rattles Young Harris

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball scored 40 points from its bench and picked up 16 points in transition to highlight a 78-54 conference victory over Young Harris on Saturday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (2-2, 1-0 CC) improve to a perfect 7-0 when playing Young Harris and have now won the last 10 meetings between YHC as well. The Mountain Lions (1-3, 0-1 CC) have now lost their last three contests and fall to 0-2 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The first half saw a closely contested matchup between UNC Pembroke and Young Harris, with the teams trading leads seven times. Moe Bangura opened the scoring for the Braves at the 18:45 mark with a free throw. JP Ricks was pivotal for the Braves, contributing defensively with a steal and offensively with a fastbreak layup in the final moments of the half, extending the lead to 36-30. Young Harris kept the score tight, bolstered by Carl Cleveland's consistent free throw shooting, but the defensive efforts by UNCP, including four blocks, helped maintain their edge at the half.
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke dominated the second half to secure a decisive victory over Young Harris. Moe Bangura initiated the scoring with a 3-pointer at 19:16, and shortly after, Tahj Johnson added a dunk to extend the lead out to 41-30. Javonte Waverly and Quay Watson contributed significant points, with Watson hitting multiple 3-pointers, including one at 10:51 to give UNCP a 62-40 lead. The Mountain Lions struggled to keep pace, despite Cleveland's efforts to close the gap. The home team maintained control, outscoring their opponent 42-24 in the half, and finished strong with a 78-54 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Quay Watson scored a career and game-high 20 points highlighted by a 5-for-11 clip from the perimeter. The sophomore added two steals, one rebound and one assist. 
+ Javonte Waverly posted 18 points on a 5-for-8 showing from the field while also grabbing three defensive rebounds.
+ Moe Bangura added 13 points and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line. The senior registered four rebounds, had two assists and one block.  
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 46.4 percent from the field and held Young Harris to 35.4 percent shooting.
+ The Black & Gold posted a 30-20 advantage with points in the paint and added 16 points in transition.
+ The Braves outscored the Mountain Lions 42-24 in the second half. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 81.2 percent of Saturday's contest.
