Second Half Surge Guides Men's Basketball By Barton

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball scored 25 points off turnovers and shot 63.8 percent from the field in the second half on the way to a 92-71 victory over Barton on Tuesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (3-2, 2-0 CC) have now won the last 10 meetings with Barton and improve to 52-28 all-time. The Bulldogs (0-6, 0-1 CC) fall to 6-27 when playing the Braves in Pembroke.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Quay Watson got the game started with a jumper for UNC Pembroke just 10 seconds into the game, setting the tone for a back-and-forth contest. Sean Quick-Streeter was pivotal for Barton, contributing multiple field goals, including a crucial 3-pointer at the 4:40 mark to give the Bulldogs a slight 26-24 lead. In response, Watson kept the Braves in the game with a sequence of three 3-pointers to tie the score at 28 apiece with 3:25 left in the half. With both teams exchanging leads throughout, Nygell Verdier's free throws in the final minute momentarily put the Braves ahead before Trevur Smalls' layup evened the score and sent the teams to the locker rooms with the scored tied at 34 apiece.
2ND HALF
A strong second half propelled the Braves to a 92-71 victory over the Bulldogs, highlighted by a balanced offensive attack. Javonte Waverly's layup at 19:38 initiated a scoring spree as the home team consistently found success in the paint. Moe Bangura contributed significantly with a layup and a free throw sequence at 13:34, extending the lead to 52-44. Quay Watson's steal and fast-break layup at 8:57 pushed the UNCP lead out to 69-53. Barton struggled to keep pace, despite occasional baskets from Quick-Streeter and Smalls, but the Braves would take their largest lead of the contest, 90-65 after a pair of free throws from Javonte Waverly with 1:35 left on the clock to seal the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Quay Watson turned in an 18-point showing going 7-for-14 from the field. The sophomore dished out six assists, had four steals and four rebounds. 
+ Moe Bangura was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line to highlight a 17-point performance. Bangura grabbed a pair of defensive rebounds and had one block.
+ Joe'l Pettiford flirted with a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Seven of the nine rebounds were on the offensive glass. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 50.8 percent from the field while Barton shot 45.3 percent from the floor.
+ The Black & Gold picked up 25 points from 16 Barton turnovers.
+ UNCP outscored BC 18-15 with second chance points and 44-32 with points inside the paint.
+ The Braves had four of their five starters score in double-figures.
