USC Beaufort Uses Buzzer Beater To Defeat Men's Basketball

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball held a five point lead with 1:33 remaining, but a  layup from Evan Kilminster as time expired gave USC Beaufort an 81-80 victory over the Braves on Saturday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The setback for the Braves (3-3) snapped a three-game win streak. The Sand Sharks (5-1) are now 2-1 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The game commenced with UNC Pembroke taking an early advantage as Javonte Waverly hit a quick three-pointer. However, USC Beaufort responded as Dylan Lewis and Evan Kilminster combined for seven points, pushing the visitors ahead. The teams exchanged leads throughout the half, with frequent ties. The Sand Sharks used a 6-0 run to push their lead out t0 20-15 with nine minutes on the clock,  but the Braves rallied to knot the score at 28 with a triple from Javonte Waverly with four minutes remaining in the half. In the final seconds, Lukas Platauna's three-pointer gave the Sand Sharks a narrow 41-40 lead at the end of the half. Despite a late layup by Quay Watson, the Braves trailed by one as the teams headed into the locker room. 
2ND HALF
Quay Watson initiated the second half with a steal and a three-pointer for UNC Pembroke, briefly giving them a 43-41 lead at 19:34. USC Beaufort's Evan Kilminster quickly responded with a layup to level the score, setting the tone for a tightly contested half. Moe Bangura started the Braves on an 11-3 run to stretched to the 8:20 mark capped off with a jumper from Nygell Verdier to give UNCP a 70-57 advantage. USC Beaufort answered with a 15-2 run to tie the score at 72 with three minutes on the clock, but a Moe Bangura layup and a triple from Javonte Waverly gave the hosts a 77-72 lead with 1:33 remaining in regulation. In the final seconds, Javonte Waverly's free throws gave UNCP a one-point lead, but Kilminster's  layup as time expired clinched an 81-80 victory for the Sand Sharks.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Javonte Waverly finished with a game-high 24 points and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the from the line. The senior pulled down five rebounds and dished out a pair of assists in 31 minutes of work.
+ Joe'l Pettiford went 4-for-5 from the field to add 13 points and grabbed five rebounds.
+ Moe Bangura added a dozen points on a 5-for-9 shooting performance. Bangura pulled down four rebounds and had a pair of steals. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 45.6 percent from the field while USC Beaufort shot 51.7 percent from the floor.
+ The Black & Gold finished Saturday's game going 20-for-27 from the free throw line. 
+ The Braves picked up 16 second chance points.
