Volleyball Defeats Francis Marion In Five Set Thriller

FLORENCE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team registered 14 blocks and hist .168 from the net on the way to a 3-2 (15-25, 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 16-14) victory over Francis Marion on Wednesday evening inside the Smith University Center. 

The Braves (14-13, 11-6 CC) have now won their last two matches and have won two out of the last three meetings against Francis Marion. The setback for the Patriots (18-9, 15-2 CC) snapped an eight game win streak and marks just their second loss at home this season.

SET 1 I 15-25 The first set commenced with UNC Pembroke taking an early lead, powered by Addie Decker's kill and a service ace from Savannah Whaley, establishing a 5-1 advantage over the Patriots. Despite this strong start, the Patriots mounted a comeback, sparked by Allison Miller's kills and capitalizing on attack errors from UNC Pembroke, eventually overtaking them at 14-13. Francis Marion continued to surge ahead, with Caroline Lucas contributing multiple kills, extending their lead to 23-13. The set concluded with a kill by Miller, sealing a 25-15 victory for the Patriots.
SET 2 I 25-22 UNC Pembroke secured a 25-22 victory in the second set against the Patriots, driven by a late surge. The set remained closely contested, with the teams exchanging leads until Francis Marion capitalized on UNC Pembroke errors to build a 20-14 advantage. However, McKenna Hayes sparked a comeback for the Braves with consecutive kills, narrowing the deficit to one point at 20-19. A pivotal service ace by Tyler Patterson tied the score, and the Braves claimed the set with a decisive 5-0 run, culminating in an attack error by the Patriots' McKayla Stockwell. 
SET 3 I 25-21 UNC Pembroke secured a decisive 25-21 win in the third set against Francis Marion. The Braves started with a 2-0 lead, aided by a service ace from Tyler Patterson. McKenna Hayes contributed significantly with multiple kills, including a critical strike at 22-21 that helped regain momentum. Abby Peduzzi and Savannah Whaley also added key points, with Whaley's kill bringing the team to set point at 24-21. A service ace concluded the set, giving the Braves a confident finish.
SET 4 I 23-25 Francis Marion secured a narrow victory in the fourth set with a 25-23 win over UNC Pembroke. UNCP started strong, taking a 5-1 lead with a service ace and a series of attack errors from the Patriots. However, Francis Marion responded with a 9-0 run, fueled by kills from Camryn Faggart and Caroline Lucas, to take a 9-5 lead. Despite a late push from the Braves, which included a series of kills by Abby Peduzzi, Francis Marion maintained their composure. Madilyn Gartner's kill brought the Patriots to set point, and they clinched the set after a block by Stockwell and Faggart on a UNCP attack.
SET 5 I 16-14 In a tightly contested fifth set, UNC Pembroke edged Francis Marion with a 16-14 victory. The set began with the Braves taking an early lead at 2-0, thanks to a block by McKenna Hayes against FMU. Francis Marion leveled the score at 2-2, with a kill from Gartner. Savannah Whaley and Abby Peduzzi were instrumental in extending UNC Pembroke's lead, with Peduzzi securing a critical point at 10-9. Despite Vanessa Blake's efforts to keep the Patriots in contention with multiple kills, Abby Peduzzi clinched the final two points to seal the set and the match for UNC Pembroke.
