Men’s Basketball Stays Hot, Topples Chowan

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team never trailed during Wednesday's contest and held Chowan to its lowest shooting performance this season to highlight a 94-63 victory at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court for Tribe Night. 
 
The Braves (17-6, 14-2 CC) have now won their last six games and improve to 10-1 when playing in Pembroke. The Hawks (13-8, 10-5 CC) have now lost two out of their last three contests and fall to 5-5 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
JaJuan Carr's jumper sparked UNC Pembroke on an 8-0 run polished off with a three from Ant Abraham to give the Braves a 17-8 lead with just under 12 minutes on the clock. Chowan worked its deficit back to 24-14 with a layup in transition from Aaron Ross, but Bradlee Haskell's three sent UNCP on an 18-5 run to push the hosts lead out to 42-19 with 3:16 remaining in the first half. The Hawks scored six-straight points to work their deficit back to 44-27, but a pair of Elijah Cobb free throws and a bucket from Quay Watson at the buzzer sent the teams to the locker rooms with the Braves holding a commanding 48-27 lead. 
2ND HALF
Chowan tried to cut into its deficit, 54-39, with a basket from Damerius Summers, but five-straight points from Bradlee Haskell cushioned the UNC Pembroke lead, 50-39, at the 12-minute mark. A 13-6 run capped off with a three from Dallas Gardner pushed the hosts lead out to 74-50 with seven minutes remaining in regulation. The Hawks stopped the run with a pair of free throws, but JaJuan Carr's triple from the corner padded the UNCP lead, 77-52, with 6:24 on the clock. The hosts put together a 15-6 surge to take their largest lead of the night, 91-59, with a layup from Quay Watson with two minutes on the clock. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ JaJuan Carr finished with 23 points on a 9-for-15 shooting performance. The senior pulled down five rebounds, had two assists and one steal in 26 minutes of work.
+ Bradlee Haskell also registered 23 points highlighted by a 3-for-4 clip from the perimeter. The Southern Pines native had a trio of rebounds and a pair of assists in just 19 minutes of action. 
+ Dallas Gardner turned in a 15-point showing and was 6-for-8 from the free throw line. The sophomore had six rebounds and a pair of assists.
+ Joe'l Pettiford flirted with a double-double with eight points and a game-high seven rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 54.1 percent from the field and limited Chowan to a season-low 37.0 percent shooting.
+ UNCP finished Wednesday's contest 11-of-27 from the perimeter, while CU was just 2-for-20 from deep. 
+ The Black & Gold never trailed during Wednesday's victory. 
+ The Braves outscored the Hawks 24-12 with points in transition. 
+ UNC Pembroke also held Chowan to its fewest points scored this season. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will travel to Central, S.C., on Saturday to battle Southern Wesleyan. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside Tysinger Gymnasium.
