Men’s Basketball Silences Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 52.8 percent from the field and picked up 56 points from inside the paint to highlight a 103-70 dominating victory over Francis Marion on Wednesday evening inside the Smith University Center. 

The Braves (19-6, 16-2 CC) have now won their last eight games and have now defeated Francis Marion in the last five meetings. The Patriots (9-16, 7-10 CC) have now lost four out of their last five games and fall to 5-7 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke took an 11-5 lead with a tip in from Jonathan Kurtas, but Francis Marion's Horaces Jacques Jr. would make a jumper to cut the score to 12-7 with 14:10 on the clock. The Braves pushed their lead out to 19-9 after a three from Dallas Gardner at the 12:39 mark, but the Patriots got a layup in transition to trail 19-11 with just under 12 minutes left in the opening half. UNCP shot 52.5 percent from the field during the period, and would use a 12-6 surge to extend its lead out to 31-17 with a triple in transition from JaJuan Carr at the 7:16 mark. The Braves closed out the period on a 25-11 run and used a bucket from Jonathan Kurtas as time expired to send the teams to the locker rooms holding a commanding 56-28 lead. 
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke started the half on a 7-2 run capped off with a three from Elijah Cobb to push its lead out to 63-30 just a minute into the action. A layup from Steven Lassiter gave the Braves a 75-41 advantage at the 13-minute mark, but Francis Marion put together a 10-2 surge to whittle its deficit back to 77-51 with 10:25 remaining in the contest. UNCP shot 53.1 percent from the floor and would take its largest lead of the night, 103-68, after a pair of free throws from Jonathan Kurtas
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Dallas Gardner finished with a game-high 22 points and went 6-for-12 from the field. The sophomore pulled down four rebounds, had four steals, and a trio of assists.
+ Jonathan Kurtas came off of the bench and turned in a career-high 20 points highlighted by a 6-for-11 clip from the field. The newcomer flirted with a double-double with eight rebounds, while also logging a pair of steals along with an assist and a block.
+ JaJuan Carr added 15 points on a 7-for-9 showing from the field. Carr finished with seven rebounds, five assists, four steals, and one block. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 52.8 percent from the field, while Francis Marion finished the contest shooting 43.6 percent from the floor. 
+ The Braves made 10-of-24 attempts from the perimeter, while the Patriots were just 1-for-11.
+ The Black & Gold posted a 56-38 advantage with points in the paint.
+ UNCP also picked up 27 points from the 22 Francis Marion turnovers.
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Saturday when they welcome North Greenville to town for a White Out. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court and fans are encouraged to wear white.
