Men 1st, Women 3rd After Opening Day Of Conference Carolinas Indoor Championships

WINSTON-SALEM  The UNC Pembroke men's and women's track & field programs combined to break three indoor school records and one meet record, while also bringing home three event titles to highlight Day 1 action Sunday at the Conference Carolinas Indoor Championships at the JDL Fast Track.

The men's squad sits in first place with 53 points, while the women's team is third with 30 points.

Mekhi Hayes broke his own school record and set a new meet record with a time of 21.59 to take first in the men's 200m prelims, while Gary Parker shattered his own record in the men's weight throw by over a meter to take champion honors with a mark of 17.51m. Geri Herrera broke her own school record in the 200m, with a time of 25.10 to take fifth in the prelims and punch her ticket to Monday's final.

On the men's side, Norman Junker took second in the 5000m with a personal-best time of 14:52.65, with Kelvin Kibet crossing in fourth at 15:26.70. Cole Thomas finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 4.48m, with Elijah Barnette right behind him in third with a personal-best mark of 3.88m. Antoine King took fourth in the weight throw with a personal-best mark of 16.20m. In the 60m hurdles prelims, Tayvon Callahan (8.07) took first, Justin Battle (8.59) was seventh, and Eli Pineda (8.63) took eighth as the trio qualified for Monday's final. Travon Morrow took fourth in the 60m dash prelims with a time of 6.83 and seventh in the 200m prelims at 22.09 to punch his ticket to the final in each event. Trent Brown sits in third place in the heptathlon after four events to round out Sunday's top finishers.

On the women's side, Moureen Kimaiyo took champion honors in the 5000m with a time of 18:10.89, while Carina Fiorucci won her second-straight indoor conference championship in the pole vault with a mark of 3.32m. In prelims action, McKylee Mosby qualified for Monday's final in the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 9.17, with Katie-Marie Sherlock (59.20) and Amiya Winston (59.77) each qualifying for the 400m final after finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.

All told, the two squads combined to establish 16 new personal bests during opening-day action.
 
The top three finishers in each event final earn first, second, and third-team All-Conference accolades.


Both teams will be back in action Monday for the final day of the championships, with field events set to begin at 10:30 a.m. and track events to slated to start at 11:20 a.m.
