February 24, 2025

WINSTON-SALEM  The UNC Pembroke men's and women's track teams each brought home one event title to pace the men to a third-place finish and the women to a fourth-place finish Monday afternoon at the Conference Carolinas Indoor Championships. Mekhi Hayes was named the men's Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year.

The men's squad tallied 114 points to take third, while the women finished with 72 points to take fourth, narrowly missing a top-three finish by just a point. Converse won the men's championship with 130 points, while Mount Olive took champion honors on the women's side for the third time in the last four years with 197 points.

Hayes took first in the men's 200m with a time of 21.63 and became the second-straight Brave to earn Freshman of the Year honors, while Moureen Kimaiyo won her second event title with a time of 10:36.93 in the women's 3000m.

Mallory Haney broke her own school record and posted an NCAA provisional mark of 11.99m to finish third in the women's triple jump, joining Travon Morrow, Tayvon Callahan, and Hayes in posting NCAA provisional marks.

In Day 2 action on the men's side, Norman Junker took second in the one mile with a time of 4:19.01 and third in the 3000m at 8:43.74, giving him three top-three finishes at the event. Trent Brown finished third in the heptathlon with 3,942 points, while Lucas Nervo crossed in a personal-best 4:22.17 to take fourth in the one mile to round out the top-five finishers.

On the women's side, the 4x400m relay team of Katie-Marie Sherlock, Amiya Winston, Haney, and Geri Herrera finished second with a time of 3:59.72, while Herrera was fifth in the 200m with a time of 25.18, with Sherlock also taking fifth in the 400m with a time of 58.58. YaNelli Dawkins posted a personal-best mark of 11.14m to take fifth in the shot put to round out the top-five finishers for the women.

All told, the Braves combined to post 26 new personal bests, five event titles, four new school records, four NCAA provisional marks, and one new meet record.
