DIVISION CHAMPS! Men’s Basketball Wins East Division, Topples Mount Olive

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team scored 58 points from inside the paint and never trailed during a 106-70 victory over Mount Olive on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court to win the Conference Carolinas East Division title. 
 
The Braves (21-6, 18-2 CC) have now won their last 10 games and finish the season with a 12-1 record when playing in Pembroke. The Trojans (11-17, 9-11 CC) have now lost four out of their last five games and fall to 3-9 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke took an early 12-0 lead after a three from Bradlee Haskell, but Mount Olive answered with a 10-4 run following a triple from Chase Dawson to cut the Trojans deficit back to 16-10 with 14:35 on the clock. The Braves shot 55.0 percent from the floor during the half and put together a 16-8 run fueled by back-to-back 3-points from Elijah Cobb and Bradlee Haskell to cushion the UNCP lead, 32-18 with 8:33 remaining in the half. UMO was able to whittle its deficit back to 42-33 with 3:49 on the clock, but the hosts closed out the half on a 13-3 run and used a layup from JaJuan Carr as time expired to send the teams to the locker rooms with the Braves holding a 55-36 lead. 
2ND HALF
The Braves pushed their lead out to 65-36 following a 10-0 start to the period capped off with a fastbreak layup from Bradlee Haskell. Mount Olive continued to cut away at its deficit, 71-46, but UNCP put together a 14-6 surge polished off with an old-fashioned three-point play from Dallas Gardner to give the Braves an 84-52 advantage with 10:32 remaining in regulation. The hosts shot 54.3 percent from the floor and padded their lead, 91-57, with a jumper in the paint from JaJuan Carr with just under eight minutes remaining in the contest. The Braves would take their largest lead of the night, 106-68, with a triple from Steven Lassiter with 1:56 left to play. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bradlee Haskell finished with 22 points on an 8-for-17 clip from the field. The senior grabbed four rebounds, had a pair of assists and one steal in 31 minutes of work.
+ Elijah Cobb posted his seventh career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The redshirt senior finished with two steals and one assist in 30 minutes of action. 
+ Senior JaJuan Carr flirted with a double-double with 17 points and a game-high seven assists. Carr went 8-for-11 from the field and added a pair of rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 54.7 percent from the field and help Mount Olive to 42.4 percent shooting. It was the lowest shooting percentage for UMO in eight games. 
+ The Black & Gold outscored Mount Olive 21-5 with points in transition and 58-26 with points in the paint. 
+ UNCP picked up 27 points from 14 UMO turnovers. 
+ All five seniors for the Braves – Bradlee Haskell, JaJuan Carr, Elijah Cobb, Josh Berenbaum and Ant Abraham – all scored during Wednesday's senior night victory. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will now turn their attention to the Conference Carolinas Tournament. UNCP will hold the top seed in the tournament and play in the semifinals on March 8 at 5:15 p.m. at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.
