Men’s Basketball Battles By King, Advances To Championship Game

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 55.2-percent from the field and picked up 26 points from its bench on the way to a 90-74 victory over King in the semifinals of the Atlantic Casualty Insurance Conference Carolinas Tournament at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Saturday evening.
 
The Braves (22-6) have now won their last 11 contests and will advance to the finals of the championship on Sunday for the second consecutive season. The setback for King (19-12) snapped a three-game win streak and fall to 7-1 all- time against UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke took a 12-4 advantage with a triple from Dallas Gardner at the 15:40 mark, but King put together a 10-2 run to tie the score at 14 after a layup from Mikhail Pocknett at the 11:52 mark. Jordan Akal knocked down a three to put the Tornado out in front 23-21, but the Braves answered with a 13-0 surge capped off with back-to-back 3-pointers from Josh Berenbaum to give UNCP a 34-23 advantage with 4:13 remaining in the first half. King was held to 25.0-percent shooting during the period as UNC Pembroke shot 52.0 percent from the floor and used a bucket at the buzzer from JaJuan Carr to send the teams to the locker rooms with the Braves leading 39-27. 
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke cushioned its lead, 44-33 with a pair of free throws from Bradlee Haskell, but King would put together a 15-5 run to work its deficit back to 49-48 with 14:38 remaining in regulation. UNCP pushed its lead out to 56-48 after a three from Josh Berenbaum, but the Tornado answered with a 16-7 run to take a 64-63 lead at the 7:31 mark. The Braves scored the next eight points lead 71-64 at the 5:42 mark, and shot 57.5 percent from the floor to help fuel the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ JaJuan Carr finished with a career-high 26 points on an 11-for-17 shooting performance. The senior pulled down a pair of rebounds and had two assists in 31 minutes of work.
+ Bradlee Haskell went 9-for-12 from the free throw line to highlight a 16-point showing. 
+ Josh Berenbaum came off of the bench to add 16 points highlighted by a 4-for-7 clip from the perimeter. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 55.2 percent from the field and held King to 37.9 percent shooting. 
+ The Braves outscored the Tornado 46-36 with points in the paint. 
+ King finished Saturday's contest going 26-for-35 from the free throw line while UNCP was 18-of-23 from the charity stripe.
+ The Black & Gold will make their second-straight appearance in the Conference Carolinas title game. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will now advance to the championship game on Sunday against Emmanuel. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. UNCP defeated Emmanuel 82-81 in overtime in the 2024 Conference Carolinas Championship game.
