Men’s Basketball Wins Battle Of I-95 Over Francis Marion

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team scored 25 points in transition and made 10 three pointers on the way to a 78-67 victory over Francis Marion on Monday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (14-6, 12-2 CC) have now won their last three contests and improve to 8-1 when playing in Pembroke. The Patriots (8-13, 6-7 CC) have now lost two out of their last three contests and are just 3-8 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
A jumper from Alex Atkinson sparked Francis Marion on a 8-0 run to lead 16-9 at the 12:24 mark. A three from Bradlee Haskell followed by a layup from JaJuan Carr cut the UNC Pembroke deficit back to 16-14, but the Patriots went on a 9-2 surge to take their largest lead of the contest, 25-16, with 8:29 left in the opening period. The hosts would go on a 20-5 run capped off with a triple from Elijah Cobb to give the Braves a 36-30 lead with just under two minutes to play in the half. Francis Marion scored the last bucket of the frame, but trailed 38-33 as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
Jordan Simpson knocked down a long three and made good on a free throw to give Francis Marion a 45-44 advantage, but Dallas Gardner answered with a triple to put UNC Pembroke ahead 47-45 at the 13:53 mark. The Patriots pushed their lead out to 56-51, following a fast break dunk from Ibrahim Wattara, but 10-0 run from UNC Pembroke gave the Braves a 61-56 lead after a jumper from Elijah Cobb with 8:42 on the clock. The Patriots tried to chip away at their deficit, 67-61, but the hosts put together a 9-0 run to stretch their lead out to 76-61 with just 1:52 remaining in regulation. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bradlee Haskell finished with 21 points on an 8-for-14 clip from the field. The senior had a pair of assists, and one rebounds in 37 minutes of work.
+ Dallas Gardner posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore also dished out six assists and had a trio of steals. 
+ JaJuan Carr flirted with a double-double with 15 points and seven rebounds. Carr added one assist, one block and one steal in 30 minutes of action. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 46.4 percent from the floor during Monday's victory. Francis Marion shot 42.9 percent from the field. 
+ The Braves picked up 25 points in transition. 
+ Francis Marion posted a 46-24 advantage with points in the paint. 
+ The Black & Gold held the lead for 53.0 percent of Monday's victory. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will step out of Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday when they welcome Virginia State to Pembroke. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
