No. 25 Men’s Basketball Upsets Columbus State, Advances To Regional Final

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The 25th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 57.7 percent from the field and held the lead for 39 minutes of Sunday's contest on the way to a 91-80 victory over Columbus State in the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament inside the Frank G. Lumpkin Center.
 
The Braves (25-6) have now won their last 14 contest and advance to the NCAA Southeast Regional final for the first time in the history of the program. The setback for the Cougars (27-5) marked just the third loss this season on their home floor.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke shot 51.6 percent from the field and took a commanding 20-9 lead after a layup from Josh Berenbaum at the 13:36 mark in the first half. Columbus State put together a 14-4 run to work its deficit back to 24-23 after a layup from Jehloni James with 8:14 on the clock, but back-to-back baskets from Dallas Gardner pushed the UNCP lead out to 28-23 with just under seven minutes remaining in the half. The Cougars scored five-straight points to knot the score at 28 apiece, but the Braves closed out the half on a 15-9 run capped off with a triple from Josh Berenbaum to send the teams to the locker rooms with UNC Pembroke leading 43-37. 
2ND HALF
A driving layup from Roman Son helped Columbus State cut away at its deficit, 47-41 at the 17:28 mark, but UNC Pembroke answered with an 11-3 surge after a layup from Quay Watson to give the Braves a 58-44 advantage at the 12:45 mark. The hosts scored seven-straight points to whittle their deficit down to 58-51, but UNCP would go on a 15-5 surge to take its largest lead of the contest, 73-56 following a three from JaJuan Carr with 7:43 left to play in regulation. The Cougars used a pair of free throws from Jehloni James to trail 79-71 with three minutes on the clock, but the Braves shot 66.7 percent from the floor during the frame to help fuel the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bradlee Haskell finished with a team-best 21 points on a 5-for-7 shooting performance. The senior posted a double-double with 10 rebounds, while also recording three assists in 36 minutes of work. 
+ Dallas Gardner finished Sunday's contest shooting 5-for-8 from the floor and had 17 points. The sophomore pulled down six rebounds and had a team-high four assists in 38 minutes of action.
+ JaJuan Carr also added 17 points after a 5-for-11 showing from the floor. 
+ Jonathan Kurtas came off of the bench to pull down seven rebounds.
NOTABLES9
+ Sunday marked the first NCAA Southeast Regional victory for th program in the round of 32. 
+ The Black & Gold posted a 44-19 advantage in rebounds and allowed just one offensive rebound during the contest.
+ The Braves never trailed during Sunday's victory. 
+ UNCP picked up 22 points from its bench and outscored Columbus State 40-24 with points inside the paint. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will now advance to the NCAA Southeast Regional final on Tuesday against Lenior-Rhyne. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the Frank G. Lumpkin Center.
