Volleyball Survives Belmont Abbey In Four Sets

PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke hit an impressive .417 in the first set and tallied a total of 14 blocks to key a 3-1 (25-17, 26-24, 18-25, 26-24) victory over Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (5-4, 2-0 CC) have now won their last two matches and improve to 12-6 all-time against Belmont Abbey. The setback for the Crusaders (5-4, 1-1 CC) snapped a four-game win streak.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-17 UNC Pembroke established an early lead, going up 3-1 with a kill from Abby Peduzzi and a block by Alexandria Mills. The Crusaders responded with a kill by Lola Sultenfuss, but service errors hampered their momentum. A pivotal streak for the Braves featured consecutive kills by McKenna Hayes and a block by Alexandria Mills, extending their lead to 10-6. UNC Pembroke maintained control despite a few attack errors, with Abby Peduzzi and Kaitlyn Koel contributing crucial points. A service error by the BAC at 22-15 allowed the Braves to secure a 25-17 set victory, highlighted by Tyler Patterson's decisive kill.
SET 2 I 26-24 UNCP took an early 3-0 lead, highlighted by a service ace from Anaya Carter. Abby Peduzzi and Kaitlyn Koel consistently delivered key kills, contributing significantly to the home team's offense. Despite a comeback attempt from the Crusaders, including a service ace by Sheridan Young that brought the score to 17-15, the Braves maintained composure. McKenna Hayes and Alexandria Mills anchored the defense, blocking crucial attacks to hold off the Belmont Abbey late rally. The set was sealed by a decisive service ace from Abby Peduzzi.
SET 3 I 18-25 Belmont Abbey surged ahead early in the third set with a commanding 7-1 lead, highlighted by consecutive kills from Katie Brookins and a service ace from Renata Bolado. The Braves responded with a run, evening the score to 11-11 after two service aces from Tyler Patterson. However, Belmont Abbey regained control, extending their lead to 21-17, aided by consistent play from Hailey Hall and Renata Bolado. The visitors closed out the set on a 4-1 run, capitalizing on an attack error from the Braves to send the match to a fourth set. 
SET 4 I 26-24 Belmont Abbey initially took control, building a 5-3 advantage with key plays from Chloe Lowder and Hailey Hall. UNC Pembroke, however, responded with a series of kills by Abby Peduzzi. The teams exchanged points throughout, with the score knotted at 18-18 after a service ace by Isabella Dillman. Kaitlyn Koel's timely kills helped UNC Pembroke maintain a narrow edge. The decisive moment came with a block by Alexandria Mills and McKenna Hayes, securing a 26-24 victory for UNC Pembroke.
